Every year, I share this video of French caretakers who take sand from Omaha Beach in Normandy, and scrub them into the letters to give them the gold coloring. They do this for all 9,386 US soldiers who died. France also gave us this land as American soil. #MemorialDayWeekend

@waitbutwhy My understanding: Diet Coke has a different flavor than Coke, so Coke Zero is a Diet Coke but with the flavor of Classic Coke, for those who prefer that. (And New Coke was a regular coke with the flavor of Diet Coke, but everyone hated that.)

@paulg I have this theory that “top universities” should actually believe they have some level of moral responsibility to maximize enrollment. But I think that runs into the reality that they are only on top because of who it excludes rather than how good they are at growing knowledge.

I'm unsure it has to be one or the other. Specifically, most climbing gym owners are non-technical, but there's also a high overlap between climbers and coders. So many gyms will still just buy SaaS, but even this small market could grow from 10 to 40 competitors as others potentially do what i did. So even tho there is a good potential customer base, the basic business model of trying to sell the software for $XXX/mo looks less and less appealing. Feels like the moment needs some out of the box thinking, but I'm not yet sure what it should be...

It's so interesting, I find myself on both sides of the AI SaaS Squeeze and I'd love some thoughts. On the one hand we've got a ton of SaaS portfolio companies, and the market has suddenly gotten brutal (see below). On the other, I'm also now an SMB owner with @bkup_climbing. 6 months ago I needed to choose some climbing gym SaaS to run the business. Despite there being ~10 companies making dedicated climbing gym software, they were all terrible. But my plan was to still pick the least bad one because building and maintaining SaaS was hard. But it suddenly become very much not hard. I finally gave up and built dedicated software to run our gym... it took 2 weeks to build everything we needed. A massive scope: membership billing, CRM, marketing automation, check-ins and front desk, digital waivers, events, inventory and point of sale, tap to pay terminal integration, marketing automation, mobile app... all of it, done, working just like i want it, trivial to maintain and improve. With a v1 for our gym, I set a team of agents to the task of turning it into a best-in-class multi-tenant SaaS product for other climbing gyms. Which is now also, amazingly, done. As we onboard beta users, I'm wondering what the right strategy is. i'm overall not very optimistic about the future of the standard issue vertical SaaS business model, so I think a radical reconsideration is warranted. Something like: - give the core SaaS away for free, but charge ~$1-2k/mo for a dedicated AI agent that can use the app for you. - open source it entirely, but charge for customizations and tweaks - some kind of WordPress model where the core software is free but very useful plugins are paid - something I'm not thinking about at all Thoughts? Remember folks you don’t need huge $$$ to win in life. The things that bring people most happiness: 1. Family 2. Friends 3. Social life 4. Community 5. Hobbies 6. Health You should work to live. Not live to work. People get caught in the latter and don’t escape. It’s okay to be ambitious. But you should be ambitious in all areas of your life.

The vibes in SF feel pretty frenetic right now. The divide in outcomes is the worst I've ever seen. Over the last 5yrs, a group of ~10k people - employees at Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, Nvidia, Meta TBD, founders - have hit retirement wealth of well above $20M (back of the envelope AI estimation). Everyone outside that group feels like they can work their well-paying (but <$500k) job for their whole life and never get there. Worse yet, layoffs are in full swing. Many software engineers feel like their life's skill is no longer useful. The day to day role of most jobs has changed overnight with AI. As a result, 1. The corporate ladder looks like the wrong building to climb. Everyone's trying to align with a new set of career "paths": should I be a founder? Is it too late to join Anthropic / OpenAI? should I get into AI? what company stock will 10x next? People are demanding higher salaries and switching jobs more and more. 2. There’s a deep malaise about work (and its future). Why even work at all for “peanuts”? Will my job even exist in a few years? Many feel helpless. You hear the “permanent underclass” conversation a lot, esp from young people. It's hard to focus on doing good work when you think "man, if I joined Anthropic 2yrs ago, I could retire" 3. The mid to late middle managers feel paralyzed. Many have families and don't feel like they have the energy or network to just "start a company". They don't particularly have any AI skills. They see the writing on the wall: middle management is being hollowed out in many companies. 4. The rich aren’t particularly happy either. No one is shedding tears for them (and rightfully so). But those who have "made it" experience a profound lack of purpose too. Some have gone from <$150k to >$50M in a few years with no ramp. It flips your life plans upside down. For some, comparison is the thief of joy. For some, they escape to NYC to "live life". For others still, they start companies "just cuz", often to win status points. They never imagined that by age 30, they'd be set. I once asked a post-economic founder friend why they didn't just sell the co and they said "and do what? right now, everyone wants to talk to me. if i sell, I will only have money." I understand that many reading this scoff at the champagne problems of the valley. Society is warped in this tech bubble. What is often well-off anywhere else in the world is bang average here. Unlike many other places, tenure, intelligence and hard work can be loosely correlated with outcomes in the Bay. Living through a societally transformative gold rush in that environment can be paralyzing. "Am I in the right place? Should I move? Is there time still left? Am I gonna make it?" It psychologically torments many who have moved here in search of "success". Ironically, a frequent side effect of this torment is to spin up the very products making everyone rich in hopes that you too can vibecode your path to economic enlightenment.

I think this is when you know you've really hit on something in a new design. Immediately the old version—the one that was great, in production, your best thinking so far—suddenly feels the trash. Peak Apple was masterful in this. Your current OS version or Phone/Macbook/iPad felt like junk the minute you saw the new one. It's an exciting feeling!

I wish Codex and Claude adopted 1Password’s model, where you get a personal account as part of your team account. I want to use them for work and personal, and I want a single subscription with shared quotas, but I want to keep the accounts separate (including MCP connections).
