I have to agree 100% with this. So many are saying that we aren’t seeing any style of play, no improvement over last season etc. The talk about ‘no style of play’ is just embarrassing. Sure, it was a horrible game, but — some indisputable truths: 🔺Last season, Liverpool had 62% possession and 28 shots at OT. Today, United had 53% possession and the shots were 8 vs 11. No improvement? ETH can certainly be questioned, but we saw a ton of improvement. 🔺There is no way around it. 90% of Liverpool’s XI has played together for 4+ years and they have a full bench, we had 2 players making their Premier League debut today, and very little flexibility when selecting the starting XI (one wing was the only real decision). 🔺This showed, Zirkzee had a really tough task asked to take a lot of passes with VvD pressing him from behind. Garnacho is out of position at RW. Casemiro cannot take a pass when pressured. And we got a back 4 that — surprise surprise — never have played together before. And has no left back. For a while, Casemiro was taking all heat. But at the same time — we pass the ball to him in situations that just don’t suit him. Why? This back 4 has had zero preseason together. It’s their first game together. These things come from building chemistry over time. And also Mainoo, the kid is amazing, but he is a kid. He is 19 y/o. Is he 12 month older than that kid we signed from Mali? 🔺There is always a lot of talk about team selection and substitutions. Last week — not playing Zirkzee was one of ETH’s ‘big mistakes’. At the same time, he is young and inexperienced. We would have been much better off with a F9 and Mount today. Amad was great when he came on, but he wasn’t great in preseason when starting against Liverpool, in fact Tsimikas had his number. Would Amad have been great if he started? Football is about opinions and team selections and subs should of course be discussed and second guessed. And I am not saying that ETH haven’t made mistakes — but it’s a bit easy to get carried away and think it’s dead certain that X, Y or Z would have happened if the manager only did this or that. 🔺But ultimately, it’s exactly like Adam is putting it, Liverpool finished 20 pts ahead of us last season — for a reason. There won’t be any short cuts. Everyone’s favorite Ange got one more point than ETH this season and he had a much easier schedule, and got to build his own squad immediately. Has never finished higher than 5th in the PL. 🔺But it’s ETH’s 3rd season??? Shouldn’t we be better than now? Look, we get no handicap for having had a manager for 3 seasons. What does it mean that it’s ETH’s 3rd season? He had three years to play together the team and install a way of play? Absolutely not. 50% of the back 4 haven’t even had a preseason for MUFC. Last season was devoted to giving Maguire and Lindelof playing time. The season before that, we had a GK who couldn’t pass up from the back. It’s year three, but the only CDM we have who can cover ground and got legs — have practiced once or twice with the team. It’s bloody effin’ annoying to watch Jamie Carragher standing their gloating — but we got exposed tonight, and to be honest — it’s hardly that surprising.
