The @NASAArtemis crew captured this view of the Moon eclipsing the Sun yesterday. The three "stars" to the lower right of the Moon are actually planets. The middle one has a slightly red tint. That's Mars.

These photos are a good reminder that Photographers argue about gear way more than history does. Some people will cheer because they were shot on Nikon. Some will say they would’ve looked better on Sony. Some will say the astronauts should’ve taken a Hasselblad and it would have been perfect. But that misses the point completely. These images, Earth, the Moon, Earth setting behind the lunar horizon, a close-up of a crater, were made on a journey around the Moon with 10-year-old Nikon DSLRs. And they’re stunning. And would have been stunning with a Lecia too, or a Canon, with similar focal lengths and sensor. Because great photographs are rarely about having the newest camera. They’re about having the right tool, knowing how to use it, and being ready when the moment happens. The brand didn’t make these images. The age of the camera didn’t make these images. The astronauts did. Their eye, their preparation, their connection to what they were seeing, and their ability to use the gear they had in one of the most extraordinary places humans have ever gone. Shoot, just hearing that they had proper shrouds over the windows and dimmed the lighting in the cabin to cut reflections, my photographer soul rejoiced! They thought through how to best capture the moments! Yes, being in the right place at the right time matters. In a moment like this, it may matter more than anything. But when that moment comes, what matters next is knowing your gear well enough to make the picture and being setup with the right gear to make it happen. Not chasing the newest model. Not arguing over logos. Not pretending the camera is the artist. Vision matters. Passion matters. Timing matters. The eclipse from Orion. On April 6, external cameras attached to the Orion spacecraft's solar array wings captured the Moon backlit by the Sun during a solar eclipse.

Ready… set… Earth! 🌎 As Artemis II flew around the far side of the Moon, the crew captured a new view of home. These images show Earthset, when Earth dips below the lunar horizon. Parts of Australia & Oceania are visible, while the dark side of Earth is experiencing nighttime.

Make new friends, but keep the old. A new photo captures the Moon's near side on the right (the side we see from Earth, identifiable by its dark splotches) and its far side on the left. The Artemis II crew are the first to see the far side with human eyes.

"We will always choose each other." Mission control has reacquired signal with the Artemis II crew after the mission’s planned loss of signal. Our astronauts are once again using the Deep Space Network to keep conversation and science data flowing between space and Earth.

🌞🌕🧑‍🚀 Right now, the Orion capsule is passing behind the Moon, so the Sun is entirely eclipsed from their perspective. During this time, they will view a mostly darkened Moon and will use the opportunity to analyze the solar corona.

it's insane how you can see the moon slowly get bigger and bigger on the camera feed as Integrity gets closer to it 🫪 this is the first time in human history we've been able to see humans get this close to the moon, live, in such quality.

Sekadar informasi, sisi jauh Bulan adalah sisi yang tidak pernah menghadap ke Bumi karena Bulan mengalami penguncian gravitasi, dengan periode rotasi dan revolusinya sama cepatnya jadi cuma satu wajah aja (sisi dekat Bulan) yang selalu terlihat dari Bumi.
