Meanwhile, Hindi-speaking states were expected to teach a non-Hindi Indian language but this has largely not been implemented in practice. This created a clear imbalance: non-Hindi speakers are compelled to learn Hindi, while Hindi speakers are not equally required to learn other Indian languages. The rollout itself was gradual, Hindi was first introduced without heavy evaluation, then exams were added with lower marks, and eventually expanded to full 100-mark assessments. This step-by-step approach normalized Hindi learning and reduced resistance over time. In this context, it is a welcome and significant decision by the Karnataka government to not include Hindi exam marks in the overall academic score. This is a major milestone in the ongoing campaign against Hindi imposition.
