After several years of training teams and working with my own teams I am convinced that, for any product larger than a POC, writing tests first is faster than writing no tests.

@EngGuidebook Although it greatly improved in the last decade, the state of IaC/CDK, serverless and other orchestration and deployment solutions are still pretty much still looking for their model solution to the platform problem. 2/2

@EngGuidebook The problem of not having no product manager is poor alignment on client needs. Especially that "no PM" is very often associated with "no service designer either". Having built those, good platform tools are probably among the hardest to get the API and UI right. 1/..

The Software Engineer’s Guidebook
A reason engineers are often drawn to working on platform teams. Especially if on product teams engineers feel like they don't have much input in influencing the team direction / tactics. From The Software Engineer's Guidebook: Chapter 5: (Thriving in Different Environments)

@DocOnDev My biggest red flag in hiring is someone that says "it's easy, I've already done it." Yet, I've seen many managers fall for it. By itself, the sentence isn't bad, but the attitude that underlines it is. Don't assume your new job will be the same as the last one. It will not be.

When you recruit "top talent" and they fall short of expectations after a year, shouldn't you reflect, "How did our actions impact them?" #leadership

@FelipeBudinich Agree. And I've never seen black or white IP addresses, but blocked or allowed ones all the time. And honestly, if it's a big effort for your company to rename a branch, you are in big trouble. That's the kind of change that exposes how bad you are to create proper abstraction.

@ninoles I don't care about the politics of the "debate" but "main" is so much better because it describes a part of a distributed system, literally there is no "master" branch.

Oh wow! Talk about crocodile tears! What mistreatment, what dictature they were under! Having to type main instead of master! Having to use allow-list instead of whitelist! Now they can go back in peace to their slavery, their heads well buried into the sand by their own masters.
Austen Allred@Austen

Am I the only one who remembers the intense pressure to move from using the “master” GitHub branch to calling it “main?” I feel like sometimes we forget just how much effort and energy went into making life better for absolutely no one.

@DocOnDev Yes, some systems can be an obstacle, but we are part of such systems (elsewhere they couldn't affect us) and so have the power to change them. 2/2

@DocOnDev According to me, here are the systems that take people's power away: - their ignorance - their fears (especially of changes) - their disdain of discomfort - their arrogance - their disengagement - their pessimism 1/..

A good manager does their best to empower their people within the system. A great manager does their best to dismantle any system that takes people's power away in the first place. #leadership #autonomy

My goal as a Fractional CTO is to enable Founders to use their time on the things that move the needle for their business: - Focus on distribution - Speak with clients - Sit on back-to-back sales meetings My job is to make sure that the tech side of the house is in order, and that the product supports the business.

@rakyll There is a fun part in cleaning up and fixing things and bringing a dead corpse back to life when everyone was thinking nothing can be done. But it is also way more exhausting and it's really brutal when you get cancelled after that.

So, you see, everyone would agree that the above is true. There is no better way to do software, nothing to discover. Stop messing around. Agile is dead. #NotMyAgile 6/6

The plan is the plan. Plans should not be changed. Changing the plan is just a way to cheat the client. You get lost without a plan. Follow the plan, no matter what. 5/..
