Quoted in this great piece by Nissim Gasteli (@nissssim) with @Mediapart, who went to Latakia Port to show how CMA CGM stayed in Syria through war and sanctions — and what its new 30-year contract reveals about the country’s post-transition economy. mediapart.fr/journal/intern… On CMA CGM’s presence, I said it was “a pragmatic choice — they’ve been there for fifteen years, they know the terrain, they’re reliable, and it’s a big communication win for the new government.” I also noted that CMA CGM is “ready to face potential risks” tied to the instability of Syria’s transition period. Looking back and on the Iranian presence, I recalled that in 2019 “the regime had assured the Iranians they could take over the terminal once CMA CGM’s concession expired — but later reconsidered.” As I explained, “Damascus realized it wasn’t a good idea for the country’s main port to fall under Iranian control, especially amid Israeli strikes on Iranian positions. Keeping CMA CGM helped maintain maritime access and export capacity.”
