So much more cruel & real than Heat. Mann drives it home remorselessly, where Heat puttered out & panicked for the pretty Pacino at the end. Thief is relentlessly grim. No flashy film chops like Heat. Thief isn't slick like Heat nor handsome like de Niro. Heat is often hailed as a masterpiece - which it isn't. Whereas Thief creeps on quietly ahead, stealing all the glory Heat fans can only dream about. A truly great crime film.

Michael Mann is a fucking genius. This sequence between Robert Prosky & James Caan at the end of Thief is Mann firing on all cylinders. Prosky matches Caan’s intensity the entire way. It’s why the look on Caan’s face at the end of this scene says it all. “Back to work, Frank….”
