A retired colleague, Commodore Mike Bhada, sent me a thoughtful suggestion after seeing these hardworking hand cart operators while on his daily commute through central Mumbai: “I was wondering if there was some way of easing this burden by retrofitting an inexpensive battery-operated motor, just enough to give traction to the wheels. The hand-cart operator would then just have to steer/guide it and not push/pull the cart. I fully appreciate the ramifications of this exercise from the technical as well as the operational & institutional aspects but imagine the relief we will render to this segment of our labor force.” It is ironic that even as we sent crafts to the moon & develop sophisticated EVs for our expressways, that these manual carts are still necessary to negotiate the narrow alleys & by-lanes of our teeming cities. Mike, compliments on your empathy. I suspect that motorising these would not be a commercial initiative, but if students at our technical institutes develop a compact and inexpensive device to make the lives of these workers easier, then corporates could disseminate these through CSR. Any other ideas?

Thought provoking sentiments…
Sharmishta Sharma@AnObserversView

For most of you, these are just photos of random acts of violence but for me, it’s going back to the incidents which I’ve lived in person. I was 6 years old when my school bus was attacked with stones by terrorists which shattered most of the window glasses. There was firing, shouting of slogans and chanting. Though I was little, those visuals inside the bus are still clear in my mind. All of us crashed on the bus floor, confused, trembling and scared. I remember the teachers instructing us not to get up or cry while removing the glass pieces from our hair. I don’t know what the visuals were like outside. But seeing these ones today make me think that it must have been similar. That was 1989, #Kashmir and this is 2023, #Haryana. My stream of thoughts started this evening when I received communication from my team to work from home tomorrow. It jolted me that it’s acts of violence and arson in Haryana for us to work from home and not clogged roads or traffic jams. My mind kept saying this is not Kashmir! Using petrol bombs, stones and mortar to stop a Shobha Yatra which has been a regular feat for decades is shocking. It’s shocking because all this violence was pre planned. It wasn’t a result of any provocation. In the last 3 decades, the stones, the slogans and the sentiment has traveled to South, East and central India. Though it’s still in pockets, it has managed to reach Delhi NCR. Stone pelting today has turned into a norm. Ever wondered where do they get these from, who supplies it and how is it made ready for these goons who for some reason are only and always from one community? Why? I’m forced to think that Modi, Yogi or BJP weren’t in Kashmir, they weren’t in Moplah, they weren’t the ones to call for a separate country in the name of religion but these voices have been, these stones have been and these sentiments have been there always. If we don’t stand for this nation now, we’ll never be able to stand, ever. #MewatVoilence #NuhStonePelting #DeshNahiJhukneDenge #NationFirst #India

I remember my many visits throughout my career to the old Pragati Maidan complex. It only used to highlight how far behind we were in terms of international conference & exhibition infrastructure. It was a source of embarrassment. This new convention centre comes at precisely the right time: when the world of commerce is beating a path to India’s doors. I look forward to attending conferences at the new complex with my head held high…. #ITPO

Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital@AyurvedicEye

“There is no alternative medicine, there is only medicine that works and medicine that doesn’t.” - Richard Dawkins, renowned British ethologist Recently, a #Hepatologist posted about eye treatment at our institution and he has also termed #Ayurveda as a pseudoscience. We at Sreedhareeyam don’t believe in criticising a particular line of thought or medicine or terming it as false. As a part of Ayurveda, a holistic and enriching line of living, we can’t term any other as false. We accept all kinds of uncertainties and welcome all radical thoughts. We are also open to criticism, and we take it as a step to improve ourselves. Medicine can be defined as the art and practice of the diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, and treatment of different kinds of diseases and injuries. It is believed that Sushruta first developed the concept of diagnosis and prognosis. According to many historians, Hippocrates is considered the father of modern medicine. The oath that modern-day physicians take before starting their medical career is even said to have been written by Hippocrates. The first modern medicine was morphine which was developed by a German scientist named Friedrich Serturner in about 1804. He developed the drug by extracting the main active ingredient from opium. Opium was being used for pain management for thousands of years in many regions of the world. The extraction of morphine was based on this knowledge. So if he termed this knowledge as pseudo, in effect he will be calling his invention also a pseudo act. The most common medicine prescribed by hepatologists for improving liver function is Silymarin. The herb from which it is extracted, Silybum marianum (Milk Thistle) has been used for hundreds of years as a hepato-protective medicine. Every treatment, be it allopathy, ayurveda, homeopathy or any other line of treatment, is being done with chemicals present in plants, other organisms, or the same ones created synthetically in a laboratory. There are several methods to apply it, external application or through internal consumption. Ayurveda has a holistic view of healing where apart from these substances, the diet, the balance and state of mind also is considered equally important. Modern medicine research has conducted countless human trials with numerous individual chemicals and compounds. They have looked for actual results in the very short term. Entire medicine system including Ayurveda has been conducting clinical trials for thousands of years and constantly improving. It is developed through the trial-and-error method which is the basic idea behind clinical trials. The medical advancements were a collective effort from all regions of the world, and what is being termed as modern medicine started from 1800s. The modern science, if it is to be called that way, is the natural step in the collection and progression of knowledge over centuries. It doesn’t stand apart from other streams, but it is built on the same thing. It is built on the technological advancements that came at the time. Ayurveda also hasn’t shied away from modern technological advancements, but rather considered as a process of progression. @SreedhareeyamAy houses modern diagnostic equipment for examinations and documentation. We follow all stringent quality control measures to ensure safety of medicines as per the regulations prescribed by Governments and also other concerned authorities. Our internal testing laboratory is #NABL accredited and houses advanced equipment like HPLC, HPTLC & UV vis Spectrophotometer to assess the active chemical spectrum in both raw materials and finished products. We also use Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer to detect heavy metals in raw materials and finished products. Now there are strict protocols including clinical studies required for #Ayurvedic drug manufacturing in India. We export our products to US, Europe and Japan where very stringent tests are conducted to assess the quality of the products. Our manufacturing facility is #GMP, ISO 22000 FSMS certified. The hospital is #NABH accredited, ISO 2016 certified and research centre is accredited with #CentreofExcellence from Govt of India. All these accreditations and classifications require diligent monitoring and strict protocols are laid out to ensure the quality of products and services. Coming back to the hepatologist @theliverdoc 's claim of our product creating toxicity to a particular patient, he failed to place all needful details of the case study in a systemic format. Some of the ingredients in the medicines mentioned here are reported to have well established scientific evidence on medical applications especially hepatoprotective activities (Hepatoprotective Activity of Adhatoda vasica and Vitex negundo Leaf Extracts Against Carbon Tetrachloride Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats :- researchgate.net/publication/34… For their consideration, studies proving the benefits of all these ingredients are available. He has said the product included ‘known liver toxic agents’ but not named the ingredients or dosages above which toxicity happens. The most commonly used substance Paracetamol is proven to be hepatotoxic, but the dosage and duration is the key to safe use (Paracetamol toxicity: epidemiology, prevention and costs to the health‐care system :- academic.oup.com/qjmed/article/… So, calling a particular substance toxic without the clinical use facts, will result in almost 99% of the substances being called as toxic including all vitamins. Furthermore, attributing liver toxicity symptoms solely to a specific medicine consumed by an individual is a biased observation and goes completely against the fundamental principles of medicinal systems. In our times, every substance including our water sources are contaminated with heavy metals and other toxic substances. It comes with the changed human practices, better termed as indiscipline. To sum it up, every toxicity suffered by a user of drugs, is not by the drug itself, but outside factors contribute highly to this cause. However, our products are all tested and certified as safe as far as toxic metal presence is concerned through the extensive use of advanced technology including AAS ( scimed.co.uk/education/what… ), along with other laboratory tests and clinical trials. We wholeheartedly welcome the critics to pay us a personal visit and assess our facilities and protocols before jumping on to conclusions. We are willing to adopt their suggestions if there is room to improve. But we can confidently say, we are one of the best and effective manufacturers of ayurvedic medicines with class 1 lakh clean room specifications adopting a uniflow process direction conforming to #USFDA standards to go along with utmost quality protocols. In summary, Sir Isaac Newton's theory of the universe, proposed 300 years ago, was later revised by Albert Einstein about 100 years ago. It is highly likely that these theories will be reinvented or modified again in the near future, illustrating that our understanding of facts and scientific truths is continually evolving. The field of modern science has made significant progress in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, constantly assessing and adjusting medications. Many drugs previously considered safe have been found to be unsafe after several years of study. On the other hand, emergency management has experienced remarkable advancements in recent times, largely driven by technological progress. Ayurveda, on the other hand, adopts a more holistic approach, viewing diseases as manifestations of imbalances or external organism interventions. It empowers the body's system to combat these threats and embraces the use of natural resources available within the same ecosystem. The techniques employed to train the mind or utilize chemicals can vary across different protocols, whether they are categorized as allopathy, ayurveda, or any other form. Ultimately, what truly matters is the outcome or the result achieved. #Sreedhareeyam #PowerofAyurveda #EyeOfAyurveda #Ayush

🎥 The breathtaking footage you're about to witness offers a vivid glimpse of the recent 🍁Canadian wildfires🔥, as seen from a 🚁 helicopter's perspective. 🌳Local trees, averaging around 5️⃣0️⃣ft in height, are dwarfed by the towering flames reaching 6️⃣-7️⃣ times their height. The scene captures a stark reality; these flames, rising up to 5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ft - about a 5️⃣0️⃣-story building - are a stark reminder of the power of nature. These wildfires🔥 offer an unprecedented spectacle, far outstripping the largest of wildfires, 📣 The record-breaking 🌴California's wildfires of 2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣7️⃣ which peaked at around 1️⃣ million acres, have been overshadowed, and it's high time we consider the urgent need for a paradigm shift in our 🌲environmental stewardship. 🍁🔥In the face of the Canadian wildfire, we see devastation on an unimaginable scale - an estimated 9️⃣ million acres reduced to cinders. 💔The ripple effects of these fires resonate through our ecosystems. Ancient giant sequoias🌲, venerable beings aged between 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣-2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ years old, are dying off rapidly. 🌡️Such is the intensity of these fires, that rain💧 literally evaporates before it can quench the flames. This intense heat also dries out the surrounding trees🌳, creating conditions conducive to fire spread, even on saturated ground. These colossal sentinels, silent yet imposing, remind us that the effort to safeguard our environment extends beyond mere arithmetic; it is a commitment to safeguard the lifeblood of our shared home, Earth. 🌍💚 #CanadianWildfires 🇨🇦🔥 #ForestFireAwareness #WildfirePrevention #savesoil
