Victory Day Was Meant to Honour the End of Darkness, Now It Risks Celebrating It. May 9th was supposed to mark the defeat of Nazism, a moment of collective memory, sacrifice, and the cost of unchecked power. What was once remembrance now feels like performance and what was once about honouring the victims of tyranny now risks echoing the very behaviours it was meant to condemn. This isn’t just about Ukraine, some will say the signs were always there, in the Soviet era, in Chechnya, in the quiet normalisation of repression dressed up as strength. Maybe they’re right. But today, it’s no longer subtle. We’re watching it unfold in real time, the propaganda, the coercion, the violence, the rewriting of truth. A narrative so far removed from reality that it has to be shouted louder each year, staged bigger, performed harder. Victory Day hasn’t just lost its meaning. It’s being repurposed. From a symbol of defeating tyranny… to a stage that risks reflecting it, that’s the uncomfortable truth. Because when a nation begins to celebrate power over principle, control over truth, and projection over reality, it’s no longer honouring the past. It’s rewriting it. 👉 My latest piece breaks down how Victory Day has changed and why it matters now more than ever to highlight it. open.substack.com/pub/shaunpinne…

❗️Slovak PM Robert Fico has requested permission to fly through Polish airspace to attend the May 9 parade in Moscow. The request comes after Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia denied overflight, forcing Bratislava to seek alternative routes once again. #Slovakia

Seven new Pantsir air defense towers were built around Putin’s Valdai residence, bringing the total to 27, Radio Svoboda reports from satellite imagery. The sites form two rings and construction began March 17, with some towers already equipped.

@ShaunPinnerUA I think more European countries should limit the maximum term of prime minister to two terms, Rutte would have been long gone in the Netherlands and wouldn't be the NATO hot shot he is now.

Unless he is able to pull off some electoral fraud that would make Kim Jong-un blush, given the voter turnout and the extent to which anti-Fidesz areas are overperforming, I dare say we're witnessing the end of Viktor Orban.

Tonight is a very poignant one for me. Exactly 4 years ago, we attempted to break out of Mariupol after being given the order - get home, or surrender. It took two attempts. This is the actual footage of us being ambushed. After hours on the run, I was eventually captured. As many of you know, the rest is well documented, but some, only just made it home today. Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦🙏

@Isabel280959 @KyivIndependent So does Ukraine. It's partially about entrepreneur VAT, for which many countries have a threshold before you are required to register. The main concern is bogus self-employment where companies hire large numbers of freelancers, while they should actually be on the payroll

The IMF is asking Kyiv to impose a value-added tax, or VAT, on individuals earning above a certain threshold who work under a status known in Ukraine as a "self-employed entrepreneur," or FOP, for its Ukrainian acronym. kyivindependent.com/whats-a-fop-an…
