pro tip: anyone who thinks legacy ip could have been replaced in a less impactful manner than ipv6, please understand that people reinvent this idea frequently, & it has the exact same flaws every time. ipv6 isn’t perfect - far from it! - but there was no “easier alternative”.

@szarka @noIPv6 10 years ago, i would say ok, fair, but now it's time to complain i think, considering that your teaching is impacted by this now it's more likely that somebody in the IT department said ONLY OVER MY DEAD BODY and others surrendered, than "just not having the resources"

Did I really want to read these university slides today? It's 30+ years since CIDR and 25+ years since IPv6. There are ~60 slides about IPv4 and NAT and then 6 slides about IPv6 … why can't they teach IPv6 first? 😭 (cc @noIPv6)

Crazy to me that IPv6 has one new issue and everyone is dropping their hot takes on the entire protocol. This isn't even the first IPv6 remote RCE for Windows (IPv6 ping of death, dhcpv6 rce, IPv6 fragment vuln all in the last 4 years come to mind)

@nywelendengu those three guys aren’t “iana” 🤦🏻 prior to actual iana runout in 2011, a /8 lasted 4-6 weeks 0/8 theoretically being reclassified as global unicast address space isn’t the magic bullet you imply it to be 🙄

IPv6, with a load of its own (L3) security contraptions, does not sit well with VPN. IPv4, in contrast, is always a better & first choice for launch a real product.

I design, build, and maintain SP networks. You don't know what you're talking about. CGNAT is expensive to maintain let alone buying legacy IPv4 to support sufficient ports range for large scale networks. Not to mention the bullshit that comes with it such as TURN and ICE.

@ThatSMP ISP-Grade NAT is already a thing. Consumers don't care about IP addresses. And the ones who do are using telebit.io or similar to get their file and game servers out there.
