Really excited to be joining Burst Capital and to chat with Techcrunch about creating new jobs in the AI era.
We all know massive AI displacement of jobs is coming, and we at Burst are investing in AI because we think it is the future. The optimists among us assure everyone that AI will create more value than the jobs it displaces, and that there will be new work created.
One of our core investment theses at Burst is to actually invest in tech companies creating jobs. We are trying to find companies, using AI or otherwise, that help Main Street, help local and small businesses, empower them, and enable them to grow and thrive.
We already have many examples in the portfolio, including ResQ and Owner helping restaurants, Faire helping local retailers, Next Insurance helping small businesses with insurance, NuBrakes helping auto repair techs, and many more.
So excited to invest with Geoff, Wendy, and Rob at Burst, and to try to do some part in powering job growth in the large economic shift that is coming.
Is the entrepreneur coaching thing growing like crazy now?
A startup founder just told me he swears by it, and a friend (Noah Shanok) is now coaching full time.
What's interesting is Noah founded Stitcher, which was eventually acquired by Sirius XM for $325M.
I had to dig in:
the end of an era – tomorrow is @noahsark’s last day @amazon.
we started @amazon 8 years ago together & were inseparable colleagues. but more importantly, he became one of my best friends. i learned more from him than i can say, we traveled together, we grieved hard times together, & we were blessed to start families at the same time.
it’s rare to find your people. it’s even more rare to find your people AND do life together. i feel so fortunate that noah & i are doing life together.
but none of that is the point of this post.
noah found his calling coaching startup founders. he built a wildly-successful side business around it – he’s the trusted coach to some of the world’s great startup founders (really) & hosts incredible founder adventure trips (last one was a snowcat skiing adventure).
this post is actually to tell you to that he’s going all in & opening up his client roster. i give it < 30 days until he’s booked up for the year.
who’s noah? he was the founder/CEO @stitcher (recently acq by @SIRIUSXM for $325MM), on the @stubhub founding team, ran @awscloud’s early stage startup team, & is an angel investor in 20+ startups. he knows the high highs & low lows. behind his back, we all call him “the wise one” (to his face, we still call him an old dumbass).
if you’re a startup founder thinking about leveling up in 2025, i suggest running (not walking) to call @noahsark. i cannot recommend anyone more highly.
(noah doesn’t know i’m posting this. he’s going to be embarrassed, but that’s ok. love you buddy 😘)
5/ While the Inquirer’s public apology does not unring the bell, it is an important first step to recognizing the danger of printing content that reinforces antisemitic tropes. I’ve spent the last two days thinking deeply about whether I should resign my position -- and have decided not to. Despite its failures, I still believe in the Inquirer’s mission and leadership. And I believe that Inquirer will have a better chance of taking additional steps towards combating antisemitism if I remain.
I hope I am not wrong.
1/ On Tuesday the @PhillyInquirer chose to publish an offensive political cartoon portraying Israel as an aggressor against a “meek” Hamas. And I cannot sit in silence.
That’s it. I hope this helps you. Also, this is my first ever tweet thread. Please let me know if it would be helpful to read more tweets from me like this.
GET HELP IF YOU NEED IT. According to a study by Dr. Michael Freeman (Berkeley), entrepreneurs have a higher prevalence of mental health conditions, are more vulnerable in the face of depression, and are less likely to talk about it. Please please please get help if you need it.
Dear burned out startup CEOs, I was completely fried by year 2 of running Stitcher. Here are the things that helped me fix myself and keep building for another 7 years. Remember that prioritizing yourself IS prioritizing your startup.
