Well, I studied Ancient Greek in grad school and I just think Emily Wilson translating polytropos as "complicated" is neat

@Platypustoo No. I never claimed that. The original post was about one specific word. I know the 2 words involved (one is a common Greek word, one is a common English word) and the translation is bad. We have a word in Greek for complicated and it's not "πολύτροπος". Simple enough?

@Platypustoo That does not answer anything. We are talking about "vocabulary" not knowledge of a language. Even if I accept that Greek and Ancient Greek are "essentially" different languages, the fact that the majority of the vocabulary remains the same means you have to prove semantic shift.
@ImAureus @nodeslashone Yeah hon, I wasn't talking about the translation. I was talking about someone with knowledge of one language claiming it gave them knowledge about essentially a 2nd language and using it to criticise someone else's choices in a 3rd language. Do you get it now?
