@Platypustoo @nodeslashone By knowing modern Greek you can have a basic understanding of Ancient Greek. Nevertheless most Greeks have studied Ancient Greek to various degrees. I’m a native speaker with advanced knowledge of both Ancient Greek and English and I can tell you your argument is pure trash…

@Platypustoo @nodeslashone You’re so-called “proof” is irrelevant to the point. Some* words changing meaning over the centuries (although most of them can still be used today, with the same meaning as they did in antiquity), doesn’t mean that the word πολύτροπος changed meaning too. Your argument is void..

@HowieHedde She’s as Norwegian as a polar bear is African. The polar bear could be born in Africa, be raised there, become its most formidable beast and the king of the savanna, but it would still not be African…

@LeviCanuleio An undergrad education does not nearly give you the education to "authoritatively" prove anything. Emily Wilson has a PhD; she is considered authoritative enough to actually be able to teach undergrads like yourself.

@egotis10 @LeviCanuleio A Greek person with higher education, will also tell you her translation is wrong. It’s just a fact.

@LeviCanuleio A Greek person with poor education could tell you Emily’s translation of πολύτροπος is completely off.

@svincenzi @LeviCanuleio The closest English one-word translation I could think of is resourceful. Multiform is also wrong.

@LeviCanuleio I briefly became curious about the "polytropos" issue and checked how the great nineteenth-century Italian poet and classicist Ippolito Pindemonte translated it. He used "multiforme," which can be easily translated as "multishape" or "multiform" in English.

@TorontoKimM @LeviCanuleio I’m not familiar with her work either, but her translation of the word πολύτροπος as “complicated”, speaks volumes about how much of a shitty work she’s done…

I am not familiar with the work of Emily Wilson but I am aware that is now considered the authoritative "go to" translation. I haven't the time or patience to seek out her work so if you would be so kind as to highlight why her work should not be considered "authoritative" I would be much appreciative.

@oodja @vlvl1313 Therefore her translation is shite because neither the literal translation or the meaning of the word are related to the word complicated…

@nodeslashone Have you studied Ancient Greek? I’m curious how similar it is to contemporary Greek.

@Dave_a_tron @nodeslashone From an English perspective, it’s a shitty translation. It’s like saying that the meaning of the word complicated is being able to solve a problem or complete a task in many different ways (being resourceful)…

@nodeslashone From an English perspective it's a dopey translation. If you wanted a single word multifaceted is better but still not great.

@CenterforRetard @nodeslashone I'm sorry. I recognise some words in your tweet but the exact meaning is beyond me. If it helps I recognise that you are white-knighting against female scholarship but only have logical fallacies to do so. HTH!

@Platypustoo @nodeslashone As a native Greek speaker, a proficient English speaker and a person that can read Ancient Greek, I can assure you with complete confidence, you’re a moron. The translation of the word πολύτροπος under no circumstances is «complicated»…

@ImAureus @nodeslashone LOL sweetie. Unless you want to claim someone can translate a long and complex document from Ancient Greek into English merely by speaking Modern Greek, only one of us looks like a moron. HTH!
