@nohat @UberFacts Yes, the distinction is accurate per common usage: acronyms are pronounced as words (NASA), initialisms letter-by-letter (FBI). However, some dictionaries note "acronym" is often used broadly for both.

An 'acronym' is an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words that are pronounced as a new word (ex: NASA) An abbreviation that pronounced letter-by-letter is an 'initialism' (ex: FBI)

@billburton The volume and sheer variety of negative feedback in this thread is mind-bogglinng, but I couldn't find anyone with anything serious to say in disagreement. It's all unhinged screetching, and this place is truly a hellscape of bots.

it's not a war between functional programmers and OOP programmers it's a war between people who get shit done and OOP programmers playing with made up abstractions which have 4 names and don't actually change anything

I think that conservatives are genuinely puzzled by liberal patriotism because their idea of patriotism is just implicit white nationalism and discredited protectionist economic policy. But those are not very good understandings of America.

@myQConnect @CaNerdIan Those are *my* sensors and that is *my* computer in my LiftMaster Garage Door Opener, which is *my* device. I should be able to control them without your company being involved. That is not impossible, but you choose not to make it be. That is anti-consumer behavior.

@nohat @SyndiMartin1 @Bennywah79 @PaulEthanAiCPA @krassenstein There’s several hundred schools where parents are reporting sexually explicit LGBTQ books introduced to the school library. Transgender students sexually assaulting girls & schools are covering it up. MAPs was socialized right after LGBTQ indoctrination hit the schools.

So, let's talk about the Drag Show Debate. First, I understand why parents and the government would not want children to see a sexually explicit show of any kind, whether it's straight, gay, trans, etc. I think almost the entire country would agree on this. Now, here is what the problem can be: Most of these laws cite terms that are vague and overly broad, and can mean different things to different people. For example, the Tennessee law states that shows featuring "male or female impersonators" who perform in a way that is "harmful to minors" should be shielded from the public's view. On the face of it, this seems reasonable, right? If something is harmful to a child, then of course, it should not be seen by them. I think we all agree there as well. But the problem is that "harmful to minors" is incredibly broad and undefined. Is a drag queen by themselves "harmful to a minor"? I'm sure some Americans will argue that. What about a drag queen in a skimpy bikini? I'm guessing even more Americans, particularly on the conservative side, would say "yes." How about Drag Queens playing with sex toys and grinding on each other in bikinis? My guess is that the vast majority of Americans would say that this is "harmful to minors." Because of the vagueness of the law, not only is there a likelihood of discrimination, but also a chilling effect for all drag shows, effectively eliminating them. Our politicians, instead of attacking each other and using rare extreme situations to paint the other side as extreme or deviant or even pedophiles, need to work together to come up with common-sense, clearly defined, and precise laws. There is no black and white.  There are an infinite number of shades of grey.  Politicians need to understand that.

@nohat @SyndiMartin1 @Bennywah79 @PaulEthanAiCPA @krassenstein No, the “Transgender” movement (and LGBTQ for that matter) is a front to normalize sexualization of children / pedophilia. Rebranding Gender Dysphoria as “Transgenders” trying to avoid the DSM identifying them as mental health patients… nice try though.

@SyndiMartin1 @Bennywah79 @PaulEthanAiCPA @krassenstein Your hypothetical straw-man is literally proven incorrect with census data. Transgender claims have skyrocketed in liberal cities, and stayed stagnant in rural and midwestern areas. But, there is no “Transgenders”. They are people suffering from Gender Dysphoria & trendies.

@WholeFoods blech this “turkey and wild rice soup” is actually mostly mushrooms but the only way you’d know that is by reading the ingredient list. I don’t eat mushrooms, so this purchase is an incredible disappointment.

@TechConnectify The "smart" solution: 1. Rewire outlet to be permanently powered on. 2. Replace switch with a smart switch, but leave relay unconnected. 3. All lamps in room use smart outlet or smart bulbs. 4. Switch controls all lights in the room you want it to control, regardless of outlet.

@mattyglesias But there hasn't been any wedding, so we are not "husbands" or "spouses". The documents say we are in a domestic partnership, so we are partners. What's weird about that?

@mattyglesias I entered into my long-term same-sex domestic partnership in 2003 when the dominant social discourse was around "domestic partnerships" and "civil unions" and, not being religious, we just got some forms notarized after moving in together and getting joint bank accounts.

It was fine pre-Obergerfell but I now think it’s weird when people refer to their “partner” if it’s not like a law firm or something.

@jonlovett If an organization wants to offset their daily schedule by an hour twice a hour, that's freedom. The rest of the state should not be forced to suffer the economic and health harms of a twice-yearly time change.

@jonlovett If there are school districts where there is a problem because kids are having to go to school "in the dark" then those school districts can change the time that school starts. Schools can change their start times. They can even change them during the school year if they want!

Right now states have to choose between permanent standard time which means early sunsets year-round or switching which means car accidents and heart attacks. Congress needs to give states the chance to pick permanent daylight saving time. Then every state can decide.
Sheldon Whitehouse@SenWhitehouse

Americans are tired of changing their clocks twice a year. When winter comes, nobody wants to be sitting in the dark. Let’s make Daylight Savings Time permanent and free ourselves from this outdated ritual.
