Time to talk about this one.

In April, FreeBSD issued eight security advisories. Six of them were for issues found by AI.

I'm going to plant a flag here: 2026 is going to go down in computer security history as the year of a million CVEs. (Maybe literally, but definitely figuratively.) LLMs are producing lots of slop, but they're also finding a heck of a lot of real vulnerabilities.

Been away since March 6th and a lot of stuff happened. Family loss, personal events, etc.
Now I'm back, and I have more series planned than ever.
All of it targets the same sweet spot: you've installed Linux, you use the terminal here and there, and now you want to understand *why* things work, not just how to copy pasta.
Here's what's coming up, and I'm still working on the right format:
* From Zero to Root: Alpine with QEMU, building a tiny deployment from scratch in a reproducible way
* The C Layer: libc, syscalls, errno, what C actually does at the OS boundary
* Shell as a Language: PATH, pipes, redirections, quoting, exit codes
* The /proc Decoder: one file at a time, what your kernel is telling you
* Signals & Process Life: fork, zombies, SIGTERM vs SIGKILL, systemd
* Files Are Everything: /dev, file descriptors, named pipes, Unix sockets
Good to be back. Posts will start dropping soon. I'm also excited to restart the Linux system call series.

The enshittification of Ireland and the hollowing out of our institutions is the single largest threat to Irish civil society and prosperity.
In this damning piece, I'm going into more detail about the graph I posted yesterday: why it's happening in Ireland, why the way we're thinking about the protests is entirely wrong, and what this means for our collective governance. Link to the article is below!

I'm usually not one to write thought pieces without much technical depth. But here we go.
Slow the fuck down.

World lost an intellectual giant.
Hoare logic, quicksort, CSP, monitors, and a lot more. Very few fields in computer science have been left untouched by his legacy.
RIP Sir Tony Hoare 💐

RIP Tony Hoare. 😢 I only met him a couple times many years ago at MSR and was not accomplished enough at the time to have much useful to say, but he sure cast a long shadow over the field...
