Soccer has to adapt and change some rules. The offsides calls are worse than the two line pass rule in hockey that was changed. It’s stupid and it makes the game less exciting. All sports change their rules to make the game better, except this one.

I would simply change the offside rule to require the whole body be offside

@RJSepich if an American football player scored a cool touchdown but had a toe out of bounds, nobody would say “eh it was cool dumb rule”?

Eliminating offside in the box is the one rule that would make soccer better. The spirit of offside is about penalizing cherry picking. But calling offside that close to the goal is dumb, rewards bad defense, ruins so many legitimate goals.

@WahlenRyan @joewheat27 It’s there to stop the game from becoming broken. Without it, strikers would just camp by the goal and teams would spam long balls, forcing defenders to sit deep and killing midfield play.

@joewheat27 The whole concept of offsides in soccer is ridiculous to me. It’s a free flowing game, unlike football where a line of scrimmage is established each play. Why should it be illegal for an offensive player to be ahead of the ball and defense?

Offsides in the box will continue to be the reason why soccer will be so darn hard to get into. If half the touchdowns in football we’re overturned on a technicality it would be unwatchable

@OVTweetmarck Intent matters, but so does player safety. A challenge can be a red if it risks serious injury, even if unintentional. And some actions like a slap are intentional and still red without major injury risk.

So I’m hearing an argument that intent doesn’t matter for Balogun’s red card, and all I gotta say is what the hell kind of system is that where intent doesn’t matter for such a heavy punishment

It’s funny how a bunch of American’s have been into the World Cup, wanting to learn about and watch soccer, but the soccer purists point their noses up at those same people. Grow the game, stop acting like snobs.

All these Europeans are complaining that Americans are suggesting improvements to soccer. Improving things constantly is why American GDP is $30T and you still have no AC in 2026. In our own sports, we've fixed overtime rules in the NFL, flopping rules in the NBA, and added the pitch clock in the MLB, all in the last few years. Adapt or die.

@greggioia Strong disagree - I find soccer incredibly boring to watch unless I have a rooting interest in one team or the other. Absolutely nothing happens for most of the match.

We have three sports leagues in the US that each make far more revenue than any soccer league anywhere in the world. We have dozens of stadiums that are far beyond the best venue in most countries. Sports as entertainment is something we unquestionably do better than anyone else in the world. So when US sports consumers give feedback, you would think people would listen, right? It's like French people commenting on your food or Germans talking about your engineering quality. Nope! Just more Euro-snob bullshit. The bottom line is soccer is a worse product than American football or basketball. That's why we don't watch it. We have options.

I find soccer purists weird. Every sport, as it gets popular, makes adjustments to accommodate television coverage. Yes, the phony cover story of "hydration" is a bit silly, but healthy sports allow television networks to make more money so they can make more money!
The Associated Press@AP

FIFA’s new hydration breaks were implemented to help players stay cool in what could be the hottest World Cup in history. But these mandatory pauses have sparked criticism. apnews.com/article/fifa-w…

We are witnessing football discourse being rewritten in real time because the media hates this man. Nations League was the Ballon d’or decider until the 61st min when Ronaldo scored in the final and won it. Now according to Messi PR, it isn’t even a major trophy anymore lmao
