FIFA is panicking: World Cup hotel cancellations are surging as global fans ditch the U.S., citing soaring costs, visa bonds, and Trump’s dictatorial behavior. Turns out nobody wants to pay $1,000 a night just to experience an authoritarian simulation.

I bought a single VIP ticket to see my favorite artist. It was on the floor, right next to the stage barricade. I saved up for months for this. About twenty minutes before the opener started, a girl about my age tapped me on the shoulder. She was holding a ticket and pointed to the nosebleed section all the way at the top of the stadium. “Hey! My friends are all in this VIP section but I could only afford the upper deck. Would you mind swapping with me so I can be with my group?” I looked at her, then looked at her friends, who were all watching me expectantly. I said, “I'm really sorry, but no. I paid a lot of money to be right here by the stage.” The girl’s face instantly shifted from sweet to incredibly bitter. She turned to her friends and said, loudly, “Wow. She’s literally by herself and wants to ruin our night. Talk about no girl code.” One of her friends stepped in: “Come on, be a good person. You're alone anyway, what difference does it make where you sit?” I looked at the friend and said, “It makes about a $400 difference. If you guys care about her so much, why don't one of you swap with her and go sit in the nosebleeds?” Total. Silence. The friends all looked at each other, suddenly realizing nobody wanted to volunteer their own expensive seat. The girl ended up having to walk all the way back up to the upper deck by herself, and her friends didn't say another word to me for the rest of the night.
