Reflects poorly on both. Gladu for obvious reasons. But if ever one needed proof that Liberal principles are first and foremost about the acquisition of power and not a coherent set of values and perspectives, it's accepting an unapologetic conservative like Gladu into caucus
Mark Carney@MarkJCarney

At this important moment for our country’s future, Canadians with a broad range of experience and perspectives are uniting to build Canada strong. I am honoured to welcome Marilyn Gladu today as the newest member of this government and our Liberal caucus. In a time of global economic uncertainty, Canada’s success will depend on how we build ambition into progress and strengths into sustained advantage. Marilyn brings the practical, results-driven leadership this effort demands. Having spent decades of her career in engineering and international business, she understands what it takes to create good jobs, strengthen supply chains, and ensure Canadian industry can compete in a rapidly changing global economy. She has been elected by the people of Sarnia—Lambton–Bkejwanong in four straight elections since 2015, and repeatedly earned recognition from colleagues across Parliament for her proven willingness to work constructively across party lines. I’m looking forward to working closely with Marilyn to build a stronger and more independent Canadian economy, meeting the challenges of a changing world with lasting opportunities for all.

I just came back from a trip to Japan. The Japanese could figure out how to provide their citizens high speed rail. There’s no reason why we can’t. Don’t let Pierre Poilievre deny Canadians high speed rail. If we need help and advice from the Japanese, let’s get it.

The moon has long been a shared locus of imagination and significance for Indigenous peoples. With the return of lunar missions, it is now a frontier for industry. Writer Michelle Cyca explores the economic and colonial logics shaping this transformation. thewalrus.ca/with-the-artem…

Since cynical identity politics are in vogue now, I present this deeply Machiavellian strategy for Conservatives to win the next election: Actively piss off Quebec as much as humanly possible. Declare they don't speak "real" French. Say Vermont maple syrup is better. Convince half the Montreal Canadiens to get "I HEART GENERAL WOLFE" tattoos. Bloc majoritaire. Liberals lose all their Quebec seats. Conservative government.

See also: Everything. Everything they claim to think is important. Even the stuff you sort of agreed with. The whole time it was all just emotional blackmail to tell people what to do, and they'll stop caring the moment they pick up a better stick.

It is astounding how pretty much the entire left have given up on climate change as an issue. It was omnipresent for ages, and now it barely features at all in leftist discourse. Sort of makes you wonder if their commitment to it was ever real.

Wow! Fantastic editorial from the @globeandmail on the need to embrace the enormous wealth and sophistication of Canada’s natural resource industries. I remember being mocked by the same editorial board a few years ago when I said that ESG divestment from the Canadian oil & gas sector was “a passing fad.” Turns out I was right. Nice to see that elite voices like the Globe editorial board have now been mugged by reality! “Unspoken or spoken, the mythology is the same – a dismissal of the role of Canada’s natural resources sectors. That mistake is the foundation for (far too many) public policy blunders over many decades. The numbers demolish that myth, and tell a very different story, one in which energy, mining and other natural resources sectors create enormous economic value and are globally competitive.” theglobeandmail.com/opinion/editor…

I know why Canadians embraced the lies. They thought they were kinder or more empathetic or nicer than the truth. But lies can never do those things. All they've brought is hate and ruin and it's time to stop.
Tristin Hopper@TristinHopper

The problem Canada faces is lies. Entrenched, institutionalized lies enforced through fear and intimidation. I'm seeing a lot of people struggling with whether they can keep their favourite lie but call out the others, but it doesn't work that way.

This is an important contribution to the discussion. There is clear value in interprovincial trade. However, it also raises a question: if belonging to a larger economy like Canada creates real benefits, then an independent Alberta or Quebec with greater access to the even larger U.S. economy could, in theory, see increased growth and opportunity. How likely that outcome would be is another matter.
Trevor Tombe@trevortombe

Rising separatist sentiment could come with real risks to jobs and income. I estimate nearly 2 million jobs depend on interprovincial trade with Alberta and Quebec. My latest for @TheHubCanada here: thehub.ca/2026/02/04/wha… #cdnecon #cdnpoli
