One year ago this week, Zongoloni finally went into labour, delivering a perfect baby boy in our midst. It was an emotional moment for all of us: Rescued in 2013, Zongoloni's mother was shot by poachers and then left to an unconscionable, drawn-out demise. Zongoloni was just a baby at the time, yet she stayed by her mother’s side until the very end. Having witnessed the very worst of mankind, it took a long time for Zongoloni to trust us. Join Lamuu for lunch! Rescued three months ago, she initially kept to the fringes. But pole pole (slowly slowly in Swahili), she’s becoming one of the gang and even throwing telltale little tantrums when her milk bottle is finished. (Listen for her rumble of protest). Elephants always know. Nearly every time a new class of graduates arrives at Ithumba, ex-orphans appear out of the woodwork to welcome them. This time, it was Ndiwa’s turn. We hadn’t seen the ten-year-old (who is now leading a fully wild life) since February — but right on schedule, she turned up at Ithumba to welcome Toto, Mwinzi, and Natibu into the fold. Ndiwa, who made the same move from the Nursery eight years ago, must have remembered all the feelings that come with graduating, because she was gentle and welcoming and understanding.

Taroha has developed a new habit: he finishes his first milk bottle and puts it down normally. He finishes his second – and walks away with it clasped in his trunk. When a Keeper tries to get it back, he runs! His enthusiasm is the same as it was in May 2024 (listen for that rumble at the end!). Taroha came to us by way of a JCB bucket. He had been found alone on the shores of Lake Jipe and it was the only vehicle rescuers had access to at the time. By the time he arrived at our Nairobi Nursery, his journey had included an overnight stay at our Voi Unit and a flight aboard an aeroplane.
