I obviously am not encouraging or condoning flags of any proscribed organisation, but in the area of East Belfast where the UDA flags have gone up, this is an area which has been subjected to the unwanted imposition of divisive Irish language signage which is rejected by the vast majority of the community. But 15% or less is enough to see this unwanted imposition. It’s probably a minority, but I’d be pretty confident well over 15% support the flags for historical reasons. I also understand from local loyalist representatives that the flags are part of an agreed protocol, and will be removed on or before Ulster Day (unlike the divisive Irish language signage which is a permanent unwanted imposition). What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. The tensions arising can be traced directly to nationalism’s aggressive Irish language campaign in traditionally unionist/loyalist areas. Flags issues require engagement & dialogue. Removing flags- whether by Sinn Fein’s DFI (who have no money for public services) or PSNI (who would be setting a very interesting precedent) would inevitably simply lead to the erection of 10 times as many. And on and on the cycle will go. There is one thing for sure; SF, SDLP and Alliance will only create rather than reduce tension. If they truly want positive resolutions, they’d be better stopping trying to whip up tensions, and they shouldn’t have started a culture war in the first place.
