Beloved Gabriel Fauré b otd 1845! What a composer, what a spirit. Like Beethoven, as his body grew weaker and his deafness more complete, he created a musical world unlike any other - filled with spiritual radiance, sensuous beauty, inner strength and profound joy. A true genius.

Summer approaches and, though I would like to read War and Peace again, that seems to be more a winter read, so I supposed I'll settle on Anne of Green Gables.

@paul_jkrause Too hard!!! The Pallisers is the series I re-read most often, and Phineas Finn is my favourite Trollope character.

@ScottMcCreaWest @d4doome Heyer is seriously underrated! She’s a fine stylist, her research is impeccable, she creates memorable characters, and can be devastatingly witty. What’s not to like?!

@MostlyPrint A fine writer. Her autobiographical One Pair of Hands and One Pair of Feet are particular favourites.

A friend mentioned he's reading '84 Charing Cross Road' at the moment, the story of two letter writers forming a deep bond, one working in a bookshop at the address. So I looked to see what's at the address just now...

@larissaphillip I haven’t read this, but urge you to read The Fortnight in September and Greengates by Sherriff; so good!

Reading this because a random person on Substack was raving about it. Every now and then you read a book that reminds you of what reading was like when you were a kid and there was an endless array of amazing YA books. You’d pick one up and be immediately drawn into it. Who ARE these people? What is their deal? Their conflict was immediately apparent and compelling. That’s what this one feels like, almost like Roald Dahl for adults. I also (slight spoiler) had that disconcerting feeling of randomly looking at the copyright page after I was a few chapters in and discovering it was written in 1939! I’d thought it was contemporary! Recommend!

I drink tea for the ritual but this morning I finally read brewing instructions on bottom of a packet of Yorkshire Tea. Brew 4 mins 30 secs. I usually leave bag in water for 30, 40 secs. I followed instructions, 40 yrs after I made my first cup. Banging. Never too late to learn.

The first thing I ever saw either Glynis Johns or Hermione Baddeley in was Mary Poppins (USA 1964). Since I’m on a YT classic Brit movie binge and one or the other seems to be in every UK film ever made, surprising they’d only worked together once before (Dear Mr. Prohack, (1949)
