🗣️ Landon Donovan to @UnfilteredSoccr on Noahkai Banks declining a USMNT call up for March camp: "Noahkai Banks, deciding between the U.S. and Germany. We’ve had this discussion before. He got called into camp, he declined the offer. Pochetino’s quote was he’s in a situation that’s not easy for him at the moment, he was very clear in a situation that he’s not available to be selected because he’s still not made the decision who he wants to play for. I hope for the USA that the decision will be for our side. The whole federation is supporting and not trying to convince him because it’s not about convincing, it’s about showing that we the federation really care about him. From the federation’s standpoint, and particularly Matt Crocker, who makes these decisions, if someone does not want to play for your country, good riddance. Goodbye. And I’m not mad at him, he can make his decision. But now, I don’t care about you anymore. I don’t, I don’t care about Noahkai. If he does not wanna play for the U.S., totally fine. I get it. If he feels more German, I’ve always said, make the decision where you’re passionate. Clearly, if he wanted to be a part of the U.S. team – he’s been in many camps. He’s been in camps. He’s been in youth camps. The federation has been on him for a long time. And this whole notion of us, like, begging him to play for our country is bullshit. Like dude, if you don’t want to play for us, don’t play for us."

Philadelphia Union captain Andre Blake on Cavan Sullivan and what makes the young U.S. international special at his age: "He is fearless and for his age, I always say, if you are going to be 15 or 16 and you are going to walk into a men's locker room there is got to be something that is going to keep you going. Otherwise you are going to be intimidated, you are not going to perform. He has this confidence about him, he is fearless, he fits right in." Blake on Cavan Sullivan and his growth and readiness, not just for MLS but for his move to Europe: "That can go two ways...I dont have the perfect answer. For where he is at right and where he was last years? He has had massive strides. His game is getting better all around. Even off the field, you can see that he is maturing which is good because he is defitnitely going in the right direction." I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the three best American players ever (pre Pulisic and McKennie) all grew up in less than ideal circumstances and had rougher childhoods in Donovan, Dempsey, and Howard. It’s not to say you can’t make it if you don’t face that type of adversity, but I think what’s available to the average current American kid is a real challenge towards producing great footballers. One of the similarities of those who had more of a privileged upbringing that made it (such as a Pulisic) is a father (or parent) who played the game at a pro level. Those who don’t meet either demo tend to just not amount to those true top players from a historical perspective of our player pool. Could surely change and there’s room for outliers (McKennie?), but this is what the historical data says.

“The reason I wanted to share my story publicly is because my story is both unique and also, sadly, very common.” USMNT legend Landon Donovan’s book is coming out tomorrow. He explains it’s a story about a kid who grew up without a father and has battled depression all his life. “The reason I wanted to share my story publicly is because my story is both unique and also, sadly, very common,” Donovan said. “It's unique in that I grew up in a 900 square foot home with a single mom who had to raise three children, and somehow, through all of that, I was able to make it out of that and become a professional.” “Sadly, it's also very common growing up in a single family home with a mother who was a special ed teacher and had to raise three kids. That is very common in our society.” “A father who was not around very much at all in our childhood is sadly also very common.” “And then growing up, in retrospect, learning that I grew up very depressed as a kid and dealing with depression, my whole life, and also a lot of people deal with that.” “So, the soccer side of it is a very unique story but the human side of it is very common, and I think I'm in a place in public eye where by sharing that, it can genuinely help a lot of people.” [via Unfiltered Soccer podcast]

No one has wanted to live in the United States as much as Antoine Griezmann. I’m glad he’s gotten his wish and will do so in a warm place.

i’m not gonna say the angel city flying start means nothing but i do think it’s worth it to note that their first two games were against the two teams with the worst GD and standings in the league last year

I think it goes far too much under the radar the talent emerging from Arizona. Here is a list of players with significant ties to the state that I’ve compiled. It may not be complete. 2007: Braxton Montgomery, Albin Thompson, Dom Berrios 2008: Landon Emenalo, Isaiah Kaakoush, Conner Cockayne, Jamison Ping 2009: Liam Vejrostek, Linkon Ream, Omar Hassan, Cyrus Kowall, Julian Pierik 2010: Will Holyoak, Max Erwin 2011: Carson Starrett, Jaethan Irwin, Wes Wolfley, Arman Alagha, Micaiah Akinduro, Carson Lane 2012: Hosea Akinduro 2013: Austin Asanovich, Weston Wright As you can see, the state is basically producing at least one top prospect per age group, and a bunch of others. Quite frankly, Arizona could easily field their own MLS academy just from talent within the state. Phoenix Rising have the best academy within USL, as far as I’m concerned. Barca AZ have the best academy outside of MLS in the country, as far as I’m concerned (although Rising are closing the gap of late). RSL AZ isn’t shabby either. This state doesn’t tend to get its credit because of the lack of an MLS club to underpin their success, but there’s a ton of footballing talent emerging from this state of late.

@Faytuks 1. Maybe. 2. Fuck off. 3. Fuck off even harder. 4. What the fuck are you even thinking? If Iran actually believes this is a reasonable starting position they can fuck right off and we will just have the U.S. flag flying over Tehran soon enough. This isn't a serious list.
