Simile is out of stealth!
At Simile, we have built the first AI simulation of society, populated by agents based on real humans.
We are building a foundation model that predicts human behavior in any situation, and a product that deploys it at scale.
Thrilled to be on this mission.

I really try hard to believe that this is not inevitable. Current product builders maybe know they don’t want this future, but 99% of them don’t even actively think about what the alternative is or don’t have a clear opinion of what kind of future they actually want, because they are under pressure from the market and extremely fast shipping speeds. Products are made by excited technologists exploring what would be cool to make, without much thought about what the consequences of those things will be in 10 years. We would need to slow down, but we can’t, capitalism can’t slow down.
+ We as humans have flaws and are generally not intelligent. Most people with low agency are not able to resist bad influence or easily accessible stimulation, so we will tend to prefer using the “bad” products made by a few irresponsible big players. Companies are trying to look “safe” at first but slowly push the boundary more and more for engagement and profit. One day we will wake up, and this will be the reality, and we won’t even know how it happened or who let it happen. Nobody wants it to happen, yet at the same time, they are supporting it through their inaction and by simply riding the technology waves and actually creating these products. Unfortunately, probably counting myself too.

I met with the investor of an infamous AI companion a few weeks ago and asked him if this was the future he wanted to see
He said no, but admitted that he felt powerless to change it
But as designers, we know this future is not inevitable
The future is a design problem
And like any problem, good designers don’t accept someone else’s blueprint as gospel—no matter how well-funded, consensus, or lucrative it may seem
Our deck ends with the words of McLuhan: “There is absolutely no inevitability as long as there is a willingness to contemplate what is happening”

They have no more playbooks.
They have no more imagination.
They will throw everything they have at you and your kids.
The only way out is a generation of thoughtful builders who lived through this playbook and chooses to reject its redeployment in increasingly perverse and anti-human ways.
And we are building.

don’t let your criticism turn you into a cynic
cynics die at the altar of their critique, but builders transcend it into crafting something great
many gave IBM the finger, but not everyone built the Macintosh
many raged against fossil fuels, but only one created the Model S
many will vandalize the subway ad, but the future belongs to those who pick up their tools—not just their stones
