Dear San Francisco Public Defender and City Officials, I am writing to express my profound concern regarding the conduct of Deputy Public Defender Ilona Solomon Yanez and to request that the City of San Francisco conduct a thorough review of whether her conduct is consistent with the ethical obligations and public trust required of an attorney employed by the City. I am reporting that Ms. Solomon Yanez has publicly expressed support for Hamas by stating, “Godspeed to Hamas,” and has repeatedly directed inflammatory and defamatory language toward me, including referring to me as a “Nazi” and using other derogatory labels. If these statements accurately reflect her conduct, they raise serious questions about her judgment, professionalism, and ability to impartially serve a diverse public. Hamas is a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization. Following the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack in Israel, Hamas was responsible for the murder of approximately 1,200 people and the kidnapping of more than 250 others. The attack was the deadliest assault on Jewish civilians since the Holocaust. Expressions appearing to celebrate or encourage such violence are deeply troubling and understandably create fear within the Jewish community and among many San Franciscans. San Francisco has repeatedly affirmed its commitment to combating antisemitism, racism, and all forms of hate. Public employees—particularly attorneys entrusted with protecting constitutional rights and representing members of the public—should be held to a high standard of professionalism, impartiality, and respect. Conduct that appears to endorse terrorism or target individuals with inflammatory accusations based on identity or viewpoint risks undermining public confidence in the City’s institutions. According to the FBI’s annual hate crime statistics, anti-Jewish hate crimes consistently rank among the highest categories of religion-based hate crimes reported in the United States. At a time when antisemitic incidents have risen significantly nationwide, public officials should be especially mindful of the impact their words and actions have on vulnerable communities. This request is not about suppressing political opinions or limiting protected speech. Rather, it concerns whether a City employee’s public conduct is compatible with the responsibilities of public service and whether that conduct violates departmental policies, professional ethics, or standards governing employee behavior. Accordingly, I respectfully request that the City: Conduct a prompt and impartial investigation into the reported statements and conduct. Determine whether Ms. Solomon Yanez violated City employment policies, the Public Defender’s Office’s code of conduct, or applicable professional ethical standards. Take appropriate disciplinary action if the allegations are substantiated, up to and including termination if warranted. Reaffirm the City’s commitment to opposing antisemitism, political violence, and support for terrorist organizations in all forms. Public confidence in our institutions depends on accountability and equal treatment. Every San Franciscan deserves confidence that public servants will perform their duties free from bias, hatred, or conduct that appears to glorify violence or terrorism. Jaime Omar Yassin is a domestic abuser who beats his wife. He has spent years building a public image as a fierce independent journalist running The Oakland Observer and a principled activist fighting state violence. That image is a lie. Multiple accounts have documented that Yassin has physically assaulted his own wife. The same man who lectures Oakland about police brutality and accountability has repeatedly used violence inside his home. This is not a side issue. This is who he is. Yassin has long operated as a radical ideologue embedded in Oakland politics. He writes for Mondoweiss and Electronic Intifada pushing extreme anti-Zionist positions. He helped organize Block the Boat actions to shut down the Port of Oakland. He was deep in Occupy Oakland and later turned on parts of the movement when they didn’t meet his purity tests. He uses The Oakland Observer to attack police funding, surveillance contracts, and city budgets while advancing the same intersectional, anti-imperialist framework he pushes in his internationalist writing. All of this happens while he maintains a record of beating his wife. Oakland has already dealt with one corrupt operator in Sheng Thao who treated public power like a personal tool. Yassin represents the activist-journalist version of the same rot. He uses the cover of independent media and social justice language to push radical politics while his private conduct shows the same disregard for accountability he claims to demand from everyone else.

Brandon Harami was one of the most toxic and expensive operatives in Sheng Thao’s corrupt administration. While Thao was taking bribes from the Duong crime family, Harami served as her Director of Community Resilience and de facto digital enforcer. He maintained an enemies list of journalists and activists who criticized the mayor and allegedly deployed burner accounts to harass and troll them on city time. His behavior was so destructive that the Oakland NAACP publicly demanded his firing, accusing him of regularly trolling and insulting Black Oaklanders and leaders online. The breaking point came when internal notes from Thao’s Chief of Staff were released showing the administration viewing Black leaders as “tokens.” The NAACP didn’t just want Leigh Hanson gone. They made clear that Harami also had to go. Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins fired him shortly after. Harami’s response was to immediately leak private conversations with Jenkins to a local radio show and threaten to sue the city. This is the same operative who helped wire Andre Jones, Thao’s federally indicted partner, into official city communications using private email accounts during the transition. He was not a passive staffer. He was an active participant in the culture of paranoia, retaliation, and institutional abuse that defined the Thao years. Oakland taxpayers paid Harami nearly nine hundred thousand dollars in salary and benefits over his time in city government. In return, he helped turn the Mayor’s Office into a digital war room that alienated the Black community, weaponized city resources for personal feuds, and protected a corrupt administration. Harami now tries to reposition himself in nonprofit and cultural work. Any organization that hires him should understand they are bringing on someone who was publicly condemned by the NAACP, accused of running burner accounts against political opponents, and deeply embedded in the same operation that produced federal indictments.
