He promised to release his tax returns as soon as there were no more audits pending, and now there are no more audits pending.

Just incredible. Any theoretical charges—there’s no indication there were any—would fall outside the scope of presidential immunity for official acts. Fascinating that Trump felt the need to pursue this. He seems to have found a way around the likely legal rule that a president can’t pardon himself.
Scott MacFarlane@MacFarlaneNews

And then there's this: The settlement gets sweeter for Team Trump In a newly-posted, one-page document, the Justice Dept details that it is now prohibited from pursuing tax claims against Trump or his family in the future Signed by Todd Blanche justice.gov/opa/media/1441…

Is there really no mechanism for judicial or congressional review of this agreement? Not that I would expect anything meaningful given then current capture of congress and SCOTUS, maybe after the midterms?

@GregTSargent Can’t the slush fund be retroactively blocked by congress?

Trump's appalling corruption here is ripe for congressional intervention. Raskin suggests a legislative overhaul that would bar such slush funds going forward. Importantly, he casts the stakes as very high, as a matter of Congress taking back its power. newrepublic.com/article/210672…

Important: Dems will seek to force Republicans to vote on a bill blocking Trump's $1.8 billion slush fund, Rep Jamie Raskin tells me. Dems will use discharge petition. Hakeem Jeffries is supportive of Raskin's efforts, I'm told. New piece from me: newrepublic.com/article/210672…

In MAGA mythology, the Jan 6ers are victims, just as all Trump voters are victims. This slush fund is supposed to represent vengeance. But the middle of the country rejects this mythmaking entirely. Rs should be forced to defend it. newrepublic.com/article/210672…

Trump looting almost $2 billion from the government coffers to pay his supporters is one of the largest scandals in US history. But our press is so beaten down and the public has become so fatigued by his constant criminality that it's barely a news story.

Trump released the largest ever strategic reserve distribution last week - almost 10 million barrels. Oil is still over $100 a barrel and gas is at record seasonal highs. This is gonna get ugly if it’s not resolved soon.

Trump was asked whether people who attacked Capitol Police on January 6 should get compensation. He wouldn’t say no. Instead, he said a mysterious committee of “four or five” “brilliant” people would decide. Translation: he wants the political benefit without owning the moral obsenity.
