@xan_desanctis How is correct calls, that take 10 or so seconds to overturn, boring?

I get why people want ABS, and I’m likely in the minority here, but I much preferred the experience of watching baseball before the replay/challenge era, human error notwithstanding. Using tech to optimize everything is boring.
Rob Friedman@PitchingNinja

Umpire incompetence or a Rulebook/ABS Mismatch issue? 🤔 This pitch may have been both: -a Strike according the rulebook strike zone (3 dimensional/starting at the front of the plate), and -a Ball, according to ABS (2 dimensional/measured at the middle of the plate).

@Christo97479098 @_plastic_plant_ @Machete47 @Miggysbat This is, again, nonsense. If a WR barely gets his feet in bounds three times in a row, he doesn't "earn" a complete pass when he touches the end line on the fourth pass. A strike is a strike is a strike, and should have nothing to do with how close the pitches before were.

@_plastic_plant_ @Machete47 @nova_burke @Miggysbat Calling it guessing just tells me you've never been on a mound. A veteran pitcher 'expanding the zone' isn't luck it's precision. If I hit the black three times in a row I’ve earned that fourth pitch two inches off. That’s not a technicality that’s the art of the game

@nova_burke @Machete47 @Miggysbat Two blocks in one night? I must be painting the corners perfectly. If you can’t handle the debate, don’t step into the box.Found the guy who watches baseball for the exit velocity and the xBA. Can I see you throw a baseball? I want to confirm something.

@selenaax_ So in the NFL, should 10 percent of the ball have to reach the goal line to be a touchdown?

@Machete47 @Miggysbat That's different. Those are the judgement calls I was talking about, and will and should always be a part of the game.

@Machete47 @Miggysbat So what? "We've always done it that way" is pretty much always a bad argument. If a better option comes along, and ABS is a much better option, then it should be used.

@nova_burke @Miggysbat This is just a lack of understanding of baseball due to not playing at a high level. You have no understanding of the mentality and why zones are expanded. It's been a part of the game for over a century.

@JacobBSpeaks You don’t understand how hard it is to judge a pitch moving 18 inches and fastballs over 100 mph do you? They’re gonna get some wrong and this abs system is just making them look bad

@Machete47 @Miggysbat The referee in an NFL doesn't get to decide that, tonight, you need 11 yards for a first down, or only one foot in bounds to make a catch.

@Machete47 @Miggysbat This is nonsense. No other sport has the officials arbitrarily changing the rules on a whim. Yes, there are judgment calls in every sport. But a pitch is either a strike or a ball based on the rules, not what the ump feels like that game.

@Miggysbat Taking the human element out of the game doesn't fix it, it just sanitizes it. Part of being an elite pitcher or hitter is learning the zone and adjusting. If you want a video game with perfect boxes, go play MLB The Show.

@mikegirard20 @MikeDro_ This makes no sense. with ABS, the "umpire" would be consistent every time, so you would get what you cared about every time you pitched.

@MikeDro_ As a former pitcher, as long as the umpire is consistent, that’s all I cared about. ABS stinks.

If it’s a strike, it’s a strike. NFL doesn’t change the goal posts depending on the ref, NBA doesn’t have different boundaries on the court. I’d rather have this than umpires having their own strike zone

@pamsson This post is why you need full ABS. The strike zone should be what the rule says, not how each umpire determines "their zone."

For me, ABS is great. You can keep the human element while also addressing instances that the players themselves deem important. In some moments, it has led players to decide a game rather than an umpire’s bad call. That’s what we want. And umpires can still stick to their zones.

@nova_burke @Pooch1080976 @JeffPassan Umpires are humans too. They’ll miss a call occasionally but if they’re getting it right 95%+ of the time that should be acceptable.

There are moments that offer a pretty good sense that something new is going to work. This feels like one for ABS. The Cincinnati crowd’s reaction was thunderous. And the situation itself — twice it salvaged a bases-loaded opportunity. This system plays.

@jamesbenoitx @BradleyGloves Having to adjust to each umpire is and always has been stupid. The "robot" is far more accurate and consistent than the human umps. Pitchers and hitters will adjust to that consistency and you won't have bad home plate umpires affecting the outcome of games.

@BradleyGloves How about just getting rid of robots, replays and other artificial devicies? ABS ruins a big part of the game which was adjusting to each umpire.

If the Challenge System proves the robot is always right, why not just have a robot umpire?
