This story is so nuts. A Jewish man sees two other Jewish men in a car driving down the road in Miami, he thinks they are Palestinians so he pulls up on them and unloads 17 rounds into their car. THEN when the two victims are in the hospital recovering, they post about the attack on social media and literally end their post with “De*th to Arabs.” Three strangers. All Jewish. And they all hate Arabs so much that one tries to kill the other two because he thinks they’re Arabs and then the other two blame Arabs for the attack. WTAF???

Words truly cannot convey my level of hatred for this city’s government. He minded his own business, left enough space on the sidewalk for people to pass, even went out of his way to make it look nice. And none of that mattered, because they want every unhoused person dead.

This unhoused man near me spent months building a little home and covering it with whatever art he could find. @LACitySAN decided that today, the beginning of 3 days of rain and cold, was the time to destroy his only shelter and all of his belongings. The cruelty is the point.

I wish people would stop doing the "rich people can handle it just fine" thing. This woman is expressing deep love for her neighbors––she knows them all by name: who was recently widowed, who lost their parents, where each person's kids went to school. That community she's spent decades investing in will never be able to be recreated. What deep sorrow she must feel. I can't imagine.

Do not, under any circumstance, buy this corporate propaganda from dominant home insurance carriers like State Farm. California law allows insurers to make reasonable profits on the risks they take. If state regulators rejected a premium level proposed by State Farm, it was probably because the proposed premium would have allowed State Farm to reap *un-reasonable* profits — in other words, to gouge homeowners desperate for home insurance. State Farm almost certainly left California because it could — not because it was forced by premium caps. The fundamental problem in the home insurance market is that consolidation has largely eliminated competition among carriers. In the absence of competition, the remaining home insurance carriers can make monopolistic profits in low-risk/low-cost regions of the country and in states that let them charge whatever premiums they want. As a result, they have little incentive to serve high-risk/high-cost markets, especially in states that do not permit them to charge unjustifiably high premiums. If we want to ensure that the insurance industry offers reasonable coverage at reasonable prices to all homeowners with reasonable risk profiles, we need to restore competition to the insurance industry.

Most unhoused people we've talked to don't know a hurricane is coming @KarenBassLA. There has been no outreach to the vulnerable unhoused community. We need urgent notification systems, transport, and warming centers with low barriers of entry to keep people safe and dry ASAP.
