“THE BEST WAY TO PREDICT THE FUTURE IS TO CREATE IT” 🌐🔓 Blockchain and Consensus: The Single Source of Truth 🔗 In blockchain, where recorded data is stored, managed and distributed across several computers in a peer-to-peer network scattered across the globe, there needs to be a way to resolve disputes when participants in the network disagree. Let's learn about the consensus mechanism, which is the common ground that forms the basis of decentralized platforms that hold nodes in the network. What is the Consensus mechanism and its importance in Blockchain? 🔗❓ A consensus mechanism in blockchain is a protocol that provides a common consensus in the event of a dispute between all nodes in a blockchain network. The main purpose of consensus algorithms is to achieve consensus within a group, prioritizing the benefit of users and ensuring that all users have equal rights. This is important to maintain the integrity and reliability of the blockchain. The consensus mechanism helps ensure that all participants in the network have the same copy and that this copy is valid and reliable. A consensus mechanism is often referred to as a consensus algorithm. These algorithms enable all participants to reach a common decision in case of disagreement between nodes in the blockchain network. This guarantees that everyone in the network has the same blockchain data and maintains its integrity. Consensus algorithms that emphasize the principle of decentralization are intended to increase the advantages of blockchain technology. The consensus mechanism provides a decentralized structure in blockchain networks and allows the network to continue if any single point fails or is misused. It also fulfills important tasks such as preventing fraud and double-spending, securing user transactions, ensuring consensus in the network and supporting the sustainability of the network. Most blockchains have three necessary properties that developers must find a way to encode into the algorithmic DNA of the network: Scalability, Decentralization and Security. As a result, consensus algorithms ensure that the blockchain network is secure, up-to-date and scalable, ensuring the integrity of transactions and immutability of data. In this way, it allows increasing trust among users and taking full advantage of the potential of blockchain technology. Different blockchain projects may use different consensus algorithms. For example, while Bitcoin uses Proof-of-Work (PoW), Ethereum has now switched to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) with the Ethereum 2.0 update. Each algorithm has advantages and disadvantages, but the main goal of all of them is to create a reliable and scalable blockchain network. Proof of Work (PoW) ⚒️ ⛏️ It is a popular consensus mechanism used by major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Litecoin. The most important detail in this algorithm is the processing power and the number of miners. Because as the processing power and the number of miners increases, this algorithm theoretically becomes more secure. PoW requires miners on the network to find the solution to a specific mathematical problem in order to verify a transaction or add a block. This solution involves obtaining a specific numerical value, often called a "hash". The basic logic of PoW is that solving this mathematical problem is a time-consuming process that requires processing power (hash rate). This increases the security of the network because an attacker would need a large amount of processing power to compromise the network or to validate forged transactions. However, the energy consumption of PoW is high and its environmental impacts are controversial. It is an energy-intensive process due to competition among miners. ♾ Pros: Arguably the most decentralized and secure of all authentication mechanisms. ♾ Cons: Slow transaction rates, expensive gas fees, expensive operating fees, and environmentally harmful energy use. Proof of Stake (PoS) 🌱 Although the Proof of Stake consensus algorithm has similar aspects to Proof of Work in terms of implementation, it works in a different way. The miners in the Proof of Work algorithm are replaced by validators in the Proof of Stake algorithm. Each block created is checked for correctness and added to the network by validators. In order to become a validator on the network and join the network, a certain amount of coins must be staked. PoS usually chooses the block generator based on available assets (Stake), not randomly. Also, the more coins the validators stake, the more influence they have on the chain. The security of the network is ensured with these coins Staked on the chain. The main goal of this system is to protect the network in a secure and fair way, reduce energy consumption and reduce environmental impact. The Ethereum 2.0 update is an example of Ethereum's efforts to transition to Proof of Stake.
