WATCH: 'I’ve never been to a DOA involving a Somali — never in my career' A former Minneapolis police officer who recently retired explains that even though he worked the streets for decades in the Somali community, he has never been to a call involving the death of a Somali.

 “I find it very strange that something that happens routinely in the department on a daily basis, that you do not see any Somali DOAs. It’s very odd. I would love to know the reason why,” he added.

@CharliNye @nutthinsbac @RebeccaCNReid They'd just make the older ones teach the younger ones and make the older one study by themselves from some sources. And if they are christian household they won't bother teaching many essential things, bible lessons and basic math and literacy don't need u to be an expert

@ArielDLacy1 @RebeccaCNReid If an older child isn’t up for babysitting then I figure it out. Because I’m the parent. Besides babysitting, all my kids do age appropriate chores that bless the family , so I guess they are all “helping” each other in some way. But small families function similarly.

@nutthinsbac @RebeccaCNReid ... you with the younger unless you ask. So if they say no to helping out with their siblings & aren't always happy to help, is that refusal actually honored? Because no older sibling in a large family has been responsibility free with their siblings. Many resent it.

@ArielDLacy1 @RebeccaCNReid You’re claiming that I can’t possibly meet all my kids’ needs and yet millions of parents think their kid’s needs are being met in a classroom or at daycare wheee it is far more chaotic and impersonal. If you’re criticizing me, look at schools and daycares too.

@nutthinsbac @RebeccaCNReid Frankly this response is strange. I said kids would need things at the same time & you ask if I believe in school & daycare? Those places aren't pretending that balancing numerous kids with one adult daily is realistic. You are. You're saying your older kids don't help...

@johnnyb3 @RebeccaCNReid 1. Learn what’s developmentally appropriate and don’t wish for more than that. 2. Study your kid- their interests, sense of humor, struggles. Meet and appreciate them where they are. 3. Embrace your role. Sacrifices are temporary and worth it.

@BeesKnees07 @RebeccaCNReid My big kids often choose to spend time with the littles or help even when us parents don’t ask. Im so happy for you. I hope mine grow up to continue to be the best support system for each other.

@nutthinsbac @RebeccaCNReid I have 6 and mine are often asked to babysit and change diapers. Usually for free. It’s part of being a family. I grew up the same way and have immense love and respect for my parents and care deeply for my adult siblings.

@splitourvote @RebeccaCNReid Right. They have opportunities to babysit, but never forced and they’re usually reimbursed in some way. We don’t want them to feel taken advantage of. They love spending time with the littles and often do without being asked.

@nutthinsbac @RebeccaCNReid Never changed a diaper or babysat? Seems kind of weird in the opposite direction. Like maybe the older kids can learn how to take care of a baby without it being their everyday responsibility. Balance is good

@nutthinsbac @RebeccaCNReid I don't understand why babysitting is a big deal. My older child watches the younger for a couple hours, and it's no big deal. I did the same with my younger brother when we were growing up. It taught me responsibility, and gave me some experience for paid babysitting jobs.

@nutthinsbac @RebeccaCNReid Considering how kids are people that's not possible. Unless you are letting kids wait long periods before their needs are met. I'm sure there is not a day that goes by where multiple kids have needs & wants at the same time.
