Listen to Dr. Patsy Yang, Senior Vice President for NYC Health + Hospitals/Correctional Health Services, discuss the opening of the first-of-its-kind ever Outposted Therapeutic Housing Unit for patents who are in custody. The 104-bed unit will serve people in custody with complex medical needs by transferring the most clinically vulnerable detainees from Rikers Island into a therapeutic setting with closer access to specialty care. It is the first of three planned Outposted Therapeutic Housing Units across the city. Dr. Yang says the Outposted units are a better way to care for the most medically involved patients and are another milestone in how we see and treat people in a more respectful and decent way.

Today marks a major milestone for New York City. NYC Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani announced the opening of the City’s first Outposted Therapeutic Housing Unit at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue — a key step toward the Administration’s commitment to closing Rikers Island. This new 104-bed unit will care for people in custody with complex medical needs, transferring the most clinically vulnerable individuals from Rikers into a therapeutic setting with better access to specialized care. As the first of three planned units, the Bellevue site signals a fundamental shift in how the City supports incarcerated people — moving away from delays and toward dignity, access, and prevention. on.nyc.gov/4sZK7el
