Hypothetically speaking, AI is great at things like boilerplate, prototypes, and turning caffeine into CRUD. But revolutionary products? Those still come from taste, architecture, debugging scars, and people who can think beyond just prompts.

For the better part of a decade, London treated AI as an interesting research problem. That era is ending, the city is now moving from experimentation to operational dependence. Banks, law firms, consultancies, logistics networks, even parts of government are no longer asking whether AI will matter. They are asking how quickly it can be integrated without destabilising the institution itself. What fascinates me is that the real race is no longer model capability. It is organisational adaptation. The winners of this decade may not be the firms with the most advanced models, but the ones capable of restructuring labour, compliance, and decision making around agentic systems faster than their competitors, I know for sure Britain once mastered the machinery of the industrial age. London now appears determined not to miss the machinery of the cognitive one.

I believe one of the great misunderstandings surrounding AI is the assumption that businesses are merely replacing chat interfaces with better chat interfaces but that is not what is occurring in London. What firms increasingly desire are autonomous systems capable of executing entire chains of work with minimal supervision. In finance, legal services, and operations, the ambition is no longer โ€œan assistant that answers questions,โ€ but rather a digital colleague capable of navigating procedure, context, and consequence, basically everything. This alters the character of work itselfโ€ฆ The modern software engineer, for instance, is gradually shifting away from pure implementation and toward what might best be described as behavioural engineering: defining intent, establishing constraints, maintaining context, and supervising machine generated execution. The machine writes more of the code but then the human becomes responsible for judgement. A subtle transition perhaps, but historically speaking, those are the ones that reorder entire economies.

One of the wildest things about AI right now is watching a single person casually build things that used to require an entire studio, research team, funding, and months of production. Chat, I just saw someone create an interactive biology app where you can rotate cells in 3D, zoom into organelles, dissect neurons, compare structures, switch microscope viewsโ€ฆ the whole thing genuinely looked like software youโ€™d expect from some giant education company ๐Ÿ˜ญ!! and the craziest part is the stack itself: One AI for images Another for code. Another for 3D assets. Then somehow it all comes together into a polished experience. We are entering an era where โ€œI have an ideaโ€ is slowly becoming more important than โ€œI have a company.โ€ That shift is still frying my brain like #WWEBacklash #WardleyDubois did.

London spent years importing skilled immigrants to patch labour shortages in finance, consulting, tech, media, and now the same โ€œelite classโ€ cheering AI the loudest is building systems designed to erase the exact white collar pathways those immigrants came here forโ€ฆ talk about hypocrisy. We all know that the โ€œlearn to codeโ€ generation studied, relocated, took visas, paid absurd rent, survived a brutal cityโ€ฆ only to discover the ladder is being quietly chopped by executives calling it โ€œefficiency,โ€ and the irony is disgusting; the people safest from automation are often the ones promoting it most, and they do it AGGRESSIVELY! I keep telling people โ€œAI is not arriving equally; surely those who already have a seat would have an edge.โ€

Not just Claude. Take @GeminiApp, it can see your docs, your emails, your filesโ€ฆ โ€ฆbut somehow still answers like it just met you 5 seconds ago!! And Iโ€™m like huh?๐Ÿคฃ Access doesnโ€™t equal understanding! Until these systems can connect context across surfaces, โ€œAI assistantโ€ is just a fancy autocomplete with permissions.
fabian@fabianstelzer

why isn't Anthropic injecting a detailed date into each user message to give Claude a sense of time progression? This can't be a cacheing issue, each user message is a cache write anyway Seems like they are slotting a daily date into the system prompt instead? don't get it

People ask the wrong questions about AI. The big question isnโ€™t whether we use it to write boilerplate drudgery no one wants to read. The question is what we do in a society when AI builds a house in a day for free, sews all our clothes, transports all our goods, and harvests every field and crop we need. We formed as the thinking ape. Will we survive as the recreational one?

Thereโ€™s truth in that. Those building the kit are rarely the ones modelling second order effects on work and careers. Incentives are elsewhere. Worth repeating because it gets lost in hype cycles. Interesting thread you are on.
Ryan Evans@EvansRyan202

People who make GPUs and LLMs are not good at predicting how it will impact jobs and career fields. I'm not the first person to make this point but it bears repeating.

Interesting framing, but itโ€™s a bit too clean. AI heavy founders do get leverage, yes, but โ€œ8 hours of agentsโ€ doesnโ€™t automatically translate into compounding. A lot of it is just faster iteration, not necessarily better judgement or distribution. And the gap isnโ€™t replacing the old technical vs non technical split so much as layering on top of it. You still need taste, domain understanding, and the boring parts like sales and trust XD. Feels like a real shift happening, just not as binary as โ€œcompounding vs buying software.โ€
GEOFF WOO@geoffreywoo

data point: the gap between a founder using agents 8 hours a day and a founder who just delegates โ€œai stuffโ€ is now wider than the old gap between technical and non-technical founders. one is compounding with leverage. the other is buying software.

Iโ€™ve lived long enough to see machines learn to speakโ€ฆ and now, apparently, forget how to work. Claude Opus 4.7 arrival is a shocker to me cause I expected more. If you put it with actual code, it starts writing essays about the problem instead of solving it. A model that knows everything, yet finishes nothing is less an engineer and more a philosopher with WiFi. Meanwhile GPT 5.5 fixes in minutes what Opus treats like a weekend retreat. We used to say in service: a map is useful, but it wonโ€™t save you when the bullets start. Claude 4.7 is a beautiful map. Shame it canโ€™t fight๐Ÿ˜‚!

Some of you arenโ€™t angry at ai, youโ€™re scared!! and instead of saying that plainly, you become loud, angry, and start calling everyone using AI a โ€œpretender.โ€ Letโ€™s be honest for a second, AI is not coming to end us. itโ€™s exposing you and I. If all you had was access to tools, time, or some gatekept process, then yeahโ€ฆ youโ€™re in trouble because now everyone can play but real creativity? Iโ€™m talking โ€˜bout 1. taste 2. direction 3. vision These things didnโ€™t disappear and they wonโ€™t. Thatโ€™s what makes us different from AI! The people who actually have it are moving faster than ever right now: building more, trying more, learning more while the rest are online shouting at strangers like thatโ€™s going to stop anything๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ Nobody is replacing you, youโ€™re just refusing to evolve.

I donโ€™t even understand why people keep blaming AI for the flood of mediocre products, even though bad builders were already shipping bad products long before AI arrived. The difference now is just speed lol. Ai reduced the distance between an idea and execution. So now weโ€™re seeing two things happen at once. We are seeing great teams iterating faster, experimenting more, fixing problems quicker, and building things that wouldโ€™ve taken months just a few years ago!! and at the same time, terrible I mean terrible teams are mass producing soulless slop at industrial scale ๐Ÿคฃ Everyone suddenly noticed the โ€œenshittificationโ€ because AI turned a slow already made leak into a burst pipe.

London doesnโ€™t blow a trumpet about its tech scene, does it? Iโ€™m thinking out loud again, am I not?๐Ÿคฃ Regardless, It just gets on with things while youโ€™re stood on a packed platform, muttering at the announcer because the Central Lineโ€™s thrown another wobbly. Take @wayve_ai , theyโ€™re not programming cars like some obedient robot following a map. Theyโ€™re letting the bloody things learn on the actual roads, dodging black cabs and cyclists the way a proper London driver does after a few years behind the wheel. Then youโ€™ve got @IsomorphicLabs , quietly turning drug discovery from white coats and test tubes into something that feels more like clever code whispering to nature itself. Less trial and error, more โ€œletโ€™s see what the algorithm reckons.โ€ Thatโ€™s the London way, isnโ€™t it? No parades down Oxford Street. Just quiet absorption. AI weaving itself into the banks, the hospitals, the roads, and the daily grind. So hereโ€™s the thought Iโ€™ll leave you with, while youโ€™re waiting for that delayed train or queuing for your flat white: When all these clever startups stop feeling like bold new companiesโ€ฆ and start behaving like the utilities we take for grantedโ€ฆ At what point do we stop calling it โ€œinnovationโ€โ€ฆ and just call it Tuesday?๐Ÿคฃ
