OPPORTUNITIES FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN DIGITAL HEALTH Two years ago, at the onset of Kenya’s major digital health transformation, I took time to understand the landscape we were entering. I put my thoughts down in an article titled “SHA is Part of a Cog in the Kenya Digital Superhighway.” The article can be read here: simonkigondu.co.ke/social-health-… Much has happened since then. There are undoubtedly significant challenges facing @_shakenya and the Digital Health Agency (DHA). But, as in many areas of life, where there are challenges for some, there are opportunities for others. The traditional model of medicine—the clinical treatment model in which I practise as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist—will remain an essential part of healthcare. We will continue to need doctors, nurses, clinical officers, pharmacists, laboratory professionals and other healthcare workers at the bedside, in clinics and in operating theatres. But the future of healthcare will not exist only within the walls of hospitals. As Kenya trains more health professionals and healthcare becomes increasingly digitised, digital health is opening an entirely new avenue for careers, innovation and entrepreneurship. Health professionals can increasingly find opportunities in health informatics, electronic health records, telemedicine, artificial intelligence, clinical decision-support systems, health data analytics, digital claims management, health technology development, research, cybersecurity, digital health policy and many other emerging areas. Importantly, health professionals should not leave the digital transformation of healthcare entirely to technologists. Technology understands systems; health professionals understand patients and healthcare. The future lies in bringing the two together. It is against this background that the Central Branch of the @TheKOGSociety (KOGS) has organised an insightful webinar on Tuesday, 28th July 2026 at 7.00 pm to open the eyes of health professionals—particularly younger colleagues—to the opportunities available in digital health. As the Digital Health Agency continues to improve its systems, incorporating feedback from health professionals and patients, I believe these opportunities will continue to expand. Our discussion will be led by Dr Ryan Nyotu @nyotuitter, a digital health expert with many years of experience. He will be joined by Dr @WangariKinyanjui, a young medical officer and member of the KOGS Central Branch Secretariat, fresh from Karatina Hospital and ready to explore what life beyond the conventional medical career pathway may offer. The digital economy has already demonstrated something important: new platforms create new professions and new ways of earning a living. Social media platforms created an economy for content creators that barely existed two decades ago. Digital health may similarly create career opportunities that many of today’s health professionals have not yet imagined. The question for the young health professional should therefore not only be: “Which specialty should I pursue?” It should also be: “What opportunities are emerging at the intersection of healthcare and technology, and how can I position myself for them?” Join us on Tuesday evening as we explore these possibilities. WHY THE SOCIAL HEALTH INSURANCE (SHI) & UNIVERSAL HEALTH-CARE(UHC) AS PROPOSED BY KENYA KWANZA GOVERNMENT? WHAT IS THE SHIFT? 1. EQUALITY vs EQUITY: The current NHIF as structured, is biased against the common man with the burden of contribution resting heavily on the low-income earners at the bottom of the pyramid while high-income earners at the top of the pyramid contribute the least of their earnings. SHI on the other hand provides a platform of fairness where every citizen contributes fairly based on earnings. A Kenyan earning KSH10,000 currently contributes KSH500 to NHIF representing a cool 5% of their income while one earning over 1 Million contributes KSH1,700 which represents a meagre 0.17% of their income while they access same services! WHAT A TILT! Under SHI, the Kenyan earning KSH11,000 and below will contribute only KSH300. 2.ACCESS TO HEALTH-CARE SERVICES AND QUALITY OF SERVICE: Everyone knows the current NHIF compensation structure as “ni ya kitanda” with very minimal compensation in case a contributor falls sick. This barely gives relief as patients continue to fundraise for bills. SHI sweeps this pain away: as the first point of charge, your SHI card guarantees you access to ALL services across both public, private and faith-based facilities in line with harmonized service tariffs. No hassles no pain. 3.OVERHAULING THE STATUS QUO: The current state of healthcare in the country is a far cry from dignity as the mainstream Insurance population penetration remains under 25%. This has continued to leave over 75% of Kenyans vulnerable and exposed to both diseases, terrible quality of healthcare services, huge hospital bills, induced poverty and even preventable fatalities with only the elites and financially abled accessing healthcare services. Social Health insurance and Universal Healthcare(UHC) true to ARTICLE 43 Of COK 2010 and the BETA PLAN(The Healthcare Pillar) guarantees ALL KENYANS accessible, quality, dignified and affordable healthcare services without any profiling, discriminations, limitations or facing any financial burdens. Quality Healthcare for all regardless of income or status. 4. FREEDOM OF CARE: Under the current NHIF structure, a contributor is required to choose facilities where they can access medical services. This can be inconveniencing and even fatal in cases of medical emergencies outside selected facilities. Under SHI, every Kenyan can be treated ANYWHERE and ANYTIME without question. Indeed, SHI/UHC is a GOODBYE TO MCHANGO WHATSAPP GROUPS! #DeliveringThePlan #AfyaNyumbani

BE CAREFUL with your Personal Details: Please read - A new Mpesa conning system I got a call from a lady saying she is from KRA. She asked if I had filed my tax returns. I said yes. She then asked if I got notification from them, I said yes via email. She asked what about via phone. I said no. She said that there is a new system they are introducing for people to get notification via Phone. She read my ID number out to me. I said yes it is. She told me, let me send you a code now which you will use next time to file your returns. Shortly I got a code then She asked me to read it out to her which I did. Then she told me to use that and hanged up. Shortly I saw that my fuliza account is activated. It registered in my head that these people are con people. I try to enter into my Mpesa to change my pin. These people keep calling me like over 20 times. I can’t change my pin as I keep getting disconnected by their constant calling now using an obscured number. I keep trying to get back in to change my pin. They have already removed a fuliza limit which is around 2000. For some reason they can not access my mswari or Kcb services which I have never used. I did not have any balance in my Mpesa account but they get the fuliza. Safaricom say they have received many calles like these and they think these people use our Huduma details to get our ID numbers. They say once you read back the code sent to your phone by these people they can access your Mpesa pin and change it. Please don’t read back any code sent to your phone by anyone. Share this to stop others from being conned.
