You’ll remember we told you a month or so back about the “cultural assessments” being added to Gore District Council planning rules. These will mean resource consent applicants will have to get mana whenua approval based on Ngāi Tahu’s cultural values. So naturally, we asked questions about this. As did many others, in particular farmers have been very concerned about how this will effect them. What are these assessments? How are they measured? What standards apply? What does it mean to impact “wairua” through farming? How do you measure “mauri”? What evidence do you provide to show compliance? And how have Gore Council responded? Well, first they barred their councillors from talking about it and now they are dodging the questions at all costs. No one can say how it will work in practice and what any of it means. Not the council, the mayor, or even the iwi representatives involved. The mayor has said it’s “for Ngāi Tahu to answer”. The council said: ‘’We are unable to answer your questions at this time.’’ Ngāi Tahu said: '' “mana whenua have nothing further to add”. Cool. So how are the people of Gore to know how this will affect them? If you are going to introduce new rules and regulations the very least you can do is clearly explain rationale and how it will work. Rules are being written into planning law that affect people’s ability to use their own land and no one responsible for those rules will explain how they actually work. Landowners are expected to assess their activities against concepts like “mauri”, “wairua”, “whakapapa”, and “manaakitanga”. Whatever your view on those concepts, the problem is they are not defined in a way that allows for consistent, objective application. And with no clear guidance, measurable threshold, or consistent framework, everyone is left scratching their heads. This is another example of the mess that local government has become thanks to co-governance. Last week we discussed the Far North and Hastings and their issues with unelected representatives outnumbering elected councillors on committees making important decisions. In Gore, the council has given the wealthiest iwi in the country an effective veto over all resource consents. A huge amount of power is being wielded by people New Zealanders did not vote for and can’t vote out. It is exactly what we’ve been warning about. It is important that Kiwis know that this has gone far beyond consultation and having a good working relationship with local iwi. Democracy is being completely railroaded all over the country in order to appease those who want New Zealand run by parallel governance systems based on race. This isn’t just a quirk of one district plan. It’s part of a broader trend where vague “cultural” considerations are being embedded into law without clear definitions, proper scrutiny, and without regard for workability. We’ve said it before, and we’ll keep saying it: New Zealanders deserve laws that are clear, transparent, and applied equally. Not systems where the rules are open to interpretation depending on who you are or who you know. If councils, or anyone else, can’t explain the rules they are imposing, they shouldn’t be imposing them at all.

The Pietà, St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. Michelangelo was only 24 when he carved the Pietà. It was completed in 1499 and the masterpiece was carved from a single block of Carrara marble. It is the only work he ever signed.

🚨 Warning Fatigue Hits Hard. Watch for the change in the Govt & leagcy media spin post last weeks warnings. For six long days & nights they promulgated & over hyped a worst case senario that never materialised despite the cyclone being down graded to a tropical storm earlier in the week. NZ 🇳🇿 needs less hype with more NZers taking personal responsibility and applying commonsense as tropical storms will always be common in NZ.

Business New Zealand have released an open letter and paid for a full-page newspaper advertisement calling on all parties to support the New Zealand–India Free Trade Agreement. This is a breathtaking position for Business NZ to take. How they and the 28 other businesses and associations could have signed up to support the India FTA without knowing what is in it is an appalling commentary on them all. How on earth can there be any sort of proper analysis of the FTA if they haven’t even read the agreement? This is the question my office asked Business NZ last week and we still have yet to receive a response. This is tantamount to those businesses signing a contract blindfolded. If it is true that this support for the FTA is not based on the actual text but instead relies on media reports and conflicting perspectives from different parties, it is a terrible indictment on how they operate. This is an appalling image for the professionalism of New Zealand business leadership.

You’re gonna throw your phone after you see this story. For 125 years, a group of Catholic nuns in New York have run a FREE hospice called Rosary Hill Home. They take care of poor people dying from cancer no charge, ever. Just pure Christian charity. Then Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a law a few years ago that forces EVERY nursing home to use preferred pronouns, house patients by gender identity (not biological sex), and let people into opposite-sex bathrooms and spaces. The nuns said: “We treat everyone with dignity… but we can’t do that. It goes against our Catholic faith.” So New York is now threatening them with $5,000–$10,000 fines per violation, loss of their license, and jail time. These sisters who’ve spent their whole lives caring for the dying are being told: obey the gender rules or shut down. Unbelievable.
