One of the tragedies of politics in Nigeria is that the terrible consequences of corrupt and incompetent leadership affects both those who support the bad leaders and those who are against them. When kidnappers invade communities and schools, they do not separate Tinubu/APC supporters from those who are against the regime. It beats my imagination why a government that has failed is still getting the support of a significant percentage of the population. Tinubu knows he cannot win in a free and fair election, but it is the same victims of his misrule that are trying to reinforce his destructive leadership.

I am privileged to be invited as an observer to the Spier Dialogue 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa, a gathering that has brought together respected leaders, policymakers, diplomats, entrepreneurs, and change makers from across Africa and the world to discuss the future of democracy, governance, leadership, urbanisation, and economic transformation on our continent. This opportunity was made possible through the kind facilitation and connection of Mr. @PeterObi, whose commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue and engagement across African leadership spaces continues to open doors for constructive exchange and shared learning. As someone who contested for the position of Chairman of AMAC in the last election, this experience has been deeply enriching, particularly as I had meaningful engagements and listened to Mr. George Hill-Lewis, the Mayor of Cape Town and Leader of the South AfricanDemocratic Alliance, on city building, sustainable urban development, and how African cities can be transformed through visionary leadership, proper planning, and focused oriented governance. These are exactly the ideas and reforms I envisioned for AMAC and Abuja, creating functional communities, improving infrastructure, ensuring environmental sustainability, empowering young people, and building cities that truly work for the people. I also had the privilege of exchanging ideas with Mr. Venancio Mondlane, the leadership of ANAMOLA, the Mayor of Mozambique, and several other distinguished African leaders and thinkers on governance, economic productivity, institutional reforms, and the urgent need for Africa to invest more in its people, especially the youth. One thing remains clear, Africa has enormous potential, but realizing that potential requires competent, accountable, and compassionate leadership committed to service rather than personal interests. The conversations here in Cape Town further strengthen my belief that transformational leadership and intentional city development are critical to building the Africa we all desire. Peter Obi arrived in South Africa from Lagos in the early hours of Friday for a conference, but true to his belief in putting Nigeria and Nigerians first, he made time to meet with members of the Nigerian community to ask after their welfare in light of recent events. The meeting was productive, but also deeply revealing, as many Nigerians present shared that no government official had reached out to them, at least not in any official capacity. They expressed happiness at receiving Peter Obi and were touched that, despite the stress and fatigue of a long flight, he chose to stop by and engage with them before even getting some rest. This is one thing that has been missing for far too long. The feeling of belonging to a country where citizens feel seen, valued, and cared for by their leaders, regardless of where they are in the world. While we continue to ask citizens to be patriotic towards their country, the country itself must also show patriotism towards its people. This is the kind of Nigeria Peter Obi hopes to restore. A nation where the people feel loved by their country, and in return, truly love it back. #NigeriaWillBeOk

Nigeria needs bold and courageous leaders with integrity and honesty of purpose to tackle the myriad of challenges facing our nation today. Many people who have been sabotaging democracy and democratic principles have been confessing their offences on national TV yet nothing happened to them by ways of arresting and prosecution. Some are in govt. The leadership that can solve Nigeria’s challenges must not have skeleton in his or her cupboards. Such leadership must not be selective in enforcement of laws and sanctions to be be imposed. It must be leadership that has uncompromising principles. The three arms of government of Nigeria must and need to be angry at the rotten systems that enabled corruption and corrupt practices in governance and decisively tackle those challenges in the most collaborative manner to produce good governance that cares for the good of the people. We need the president that does not allow and tolerate constitutional sacrilege just for political gains and conveniences. Anyone who corrupts the system or gives such appearances should be visited with the full weight of the law as prescribed in our laws. Today many people in power openly boast how they subverted the soveriegnity of the people to impose people on us, yet nothing happened to them. There are no consequences for misconduct. That is our bane. The executive must execute the law. They must enforce the law. They must not close their eyes to those who breached the laws no matter how powerful and connected. We need executive that allows the security agencies to do their jobs without interferences. We need executives that respect the rule of law and due process. We need executive that respects sovereignty of the people and not executive that encourages thugs and thuggery in democratic processes. We need executive that enforces and executive laws without fear and favour. In the same way we need the legislative branch of government that is responsible and accountable and truly independent. We need legislative leaders that carry out oversight functions devoid of corrupt motives and commercial interests. We do not need legislative leaders who are part and parcel of executive in action and conduct and who cannot hold the executive accountable. Today it appears Nigerian parliaments all over including at the national levels are simply existing in name. We have no independent parliaments that hold the government at the executive levels accountable as envisioned by the draftsmen of our constitution. Parliaments members have effectively fused themselves into the executive while pretending to be Hon members of parliament. Indeed executive branches both at the states and national levels have effectively captured parliamentary members. Most state Houses of Assembly are only effective as instruments of political vendetta against perceived enemies of godfathers. Most constitutional sacrilege being committed by executive branch of government go unpunished because we have weak legislative branch of government in Nigeria. For Nigeria to attain true greatness amongst the comity of nations accountability in governance must be our watch-word. Today most people in power are not accountable. That is why we need judiciary that is not only independent in name but must be truly autonomous and independent in action. Where judicial institution is captured, then democracy is in danger. Governance is eroded and accountability becomes impossible. Today it appears only political matters recieved urgent attention and hearing. The long delay in obtaining justice in our courts must be addressed. Judiciary must build confidence of the people by giving quick and undiluted justice in judgments. This is how true judiciary works. We need true judiciary to restore confidence in adjudication. Delayed justice is no justice. Caricature justice is no justice. Let there be true justice in our courts and in our land. People must obey court orders. There is no substitude to it.

One thing I am learning from highly successful individuals is time management. They don't waste time on things that are not fruitful. They move very fast. If Obi didn't leave ADC, he would still be talking about primaries. He has moved on from that already. That's why he is a successful businessman.

Earlier today, I arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, to take part in the Spier Dialogue 2026, an important event centred on the future of Africa and the urgent challenges facing our continent and the globe. The Spier Dialogue occurs at a crucial time as Africa grapples with significant issues in governance, democracy, economic inclusion, urbanisation, migration, and leadership. However, it also highlights the vast opportunities presented by the energy and creativity of our young population. As leaders and stakeholders gather from various regions, I look forward to partaking in insightful discussions, especially as I have the privilege of addressing attendees tomorrow on policies geared toward growth. Africa’s future should not be characterised by poverty amid abundance or by division instead of development. It is time for us to transition from consumption to production, from divisive politics to politics built on competence and compassion, and from mere promises to tangible progress that serves everyday citizens. Upon my arrival, I had the opportunity to meet with the Nigerian community in Cape Town for a heartfelt discussion about the recent challenges affecting African expatriates in South Africa, resulting in over two hours of fruitful dialogue. I remain dedicated to advocating for a New Nigeria and a New Africa—one where governance genuinely serves the people, where the youth are equipped with education and opportunities, and where leadership is founded on integrity, service, and sacrifice. A New Nigeria POssible. -PO
