… for a simple example, try making the most feature rich device with a single LED & single button for the UI. This forces depth in creativity. Not that abstraction is completely bad. In fact, it’s what allows large tech advancements for humanity. But… 2/n

This is why I love hardware, especially highly constrained embedded stuff & board/schematic design. Abstractions are wasteful luxury that take you away from “the real”. Often forcing you to remember the chem/phys properties of a component. But it’s also the mental aspect… 1/n

@patio11 Oh man. I miss Tokyo coffee culture. Going to Bear Pond with friends from NY and discovering that the owner/barista's mentor was friends with one of my travel companions was totally mindblowing. Also, the coffee was truly exceptional.

An internationally renowned coffee chain in Japan, at a flagship, 50 deep in a queue on a Sunday: “Oh goodness we have made subtly the wrong thing.” “No worries I can see you are busy. If it’s no trouble for you…” “It is no trouble for me to make the right thing.”

@obra @genehack No doubt my 14% of days dealing with this as a cis white guy is less than, say, 71% for others. I wouldn't pretend otherwise. Yet I'm making statements on bad social networks to vent about my day. It can't be less problematic for me to deal than anyone else. That's not ok.

I don't know who still needs to hear this in the year of two thousand twenty two but it keeps happening to me so let me be clear: do not make qualitative comments on someone's appearance at work! I made this guide to help you know if it's OK to make a comment on someone's body.

@obra @genehack Frequency isn't the metric. Impact is. They can be correlated, sure, but number of occurrences isn't a factor for determining negative impact as you've already demonstrated.

@caseywest @genehack I remember the one time I walked into a business meeting in China and the saleswoman said something along the lines of "You're cute. Are you seeing anyone?" and I just about died. And as a cishet white dude, I know that 'the one time' for me is...basically daily for many people.

@genehack Thank you for asking! There can be a difference, and especially if you're a friend and the comment was made privately (as opposed to in a group). If you'd like to pay a physical complement in a work place and you aren't confident the context is ok for the receiver: don't!
