I hate when people say "write for yourself" after people express disappointment in lack of comments or kudos. You can write all of the fics you want but your motivation will start to dwindle if nobody interacts with your stuff. It's disheartening. We aren't machines.

definitely feel like you can't let lack of engagement affect how you feel about the pure quality of your work. some of the fics I consider my best did NOT do well but i reread those shits all the time like "damn i snapped" lol

My strategy isn’t “write for myself” it’s “have an insane ego.” Some of my fics I love flop and I’m like “y’all are wrong. Its awesome. Im sorry you didnt enjoy it.” I don’t love all my fics but you cant shake my belief that certain ones are good unless you give me good critiques

@Sirens_Scales and if all else fails, abandon it lol I think too many people disregard this option as "giving up," and it sure hurts to do with an idea you're excited about. but if you don't want to work on it, and it seems nobody else does either, why agonize over it? you'll have other ideas

I wouldn't consider myself a longfic writer, I mostly do oneshots, but just from being around for a decade (christ) on ao3, the trends I've noticed are 1. readers these days don't leave comments on unfinished fics, leading to lower motivation for writers to continue them (1/4)
