ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 1953 April 8, 1953: Jomo Kenyatta is sentenced to 7 years hard labor Kenyatta led the Mau Mau movement against the British colonialists. He is considered to be Kenya’s founding father and became the country’s first President in 1964. The armed rebellion of the Mau Mauwas the culminating response to colonial rule. Although there had been previous instances of violent resistance to colonialism, the Mau Mau revolt was the most prolonged and violent anti-colonial warfare in the British Kenya colony.
