𝕊𝕒𝕥 𝕄𝕒𝕘𝕚𝕔𝕚𝕒𝕟𝕤: ℝ𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕟𝕘𝕖 𝕊𝕒𝕘𝕒 The Attack Here's a breakdown of what happened during the Sat Magicians mint yesterday. 1. Preparing the attack: attackers navigated the Discord communities in an attempt to acquire as many FCFS spots as possible. 2. Phase one (GTD): Malicious actors launched a DDOS attack to probe the effectiveness of their attack during the GTD phase. Their attack was effective, and they stopped it shortly after, so the mint can continue unbothered. 3. Phase two (FCFS): They launched the full-scale attack and kept the machinery down, while they used calls directly to the API to mint most of their spots. We managed to react and reject most of the calls, but at the time, there were already around 1000 FCFS spots taken by the attackers. 4. Because they didn't manage to mint all the supply, they kept the attack going in hopes that they would mint everything. All in all: clever attack: social engineering to buy the spots, DDOS, and botting the mint. Retribution The next steps we'll take: 1. Infrastructure: Solidify the platform and safeguard it from spam and DDOS attacks for the next phase of the mint. We're talking traffic filters, captchas, DNS-level traffic filtering, and more. 2. Thanking the bots: We ran queries, and we are analyzing the requests received yesterday. After this process is done, we will REMOVE any inscriptions flagged as minted by bots from the official collection. We want to thank the bots for their kind donation to miners! It helps secure the Bitcoin network! 🤝 3. Resuming the Mint: After we eliminate all the inscriptions minted by the bots from the collection, we will generate new magicians and resume the FCFS in a proper, orderly way, so every HUMAN actor on the FCFS list will have a fair chance to mint their new Magician! 4. Flagging communities: After all is said and done, we will investigate which communities collaborated with the attackers and sold the FCFS spots. We will create a public list with said communities so future mints will be able to avoid them. The whole process might take a little while. I want to thank anyone who fairly minted during the GTD phase. Aside from the Denial of Service, every queue went well, everything was minted smoothly on the Bitcoin network, and your inscription will be included in the final collection after the second part of the mint. We expect the second part of the mint to take place next week, on Wednesday, 10 September, 14:30UTC. If anything changes and we need more time to take the above steps, I will inform you here. Notifs on! 🔔 Setting aside the unpleasant mint experience, having such an interest in our collection that it attracts fairly sophisticated actors that can launch a coordinated attack like this is, by all accounts, hell'a bullish! All thanks to @bunya_eth's outstanding skills 🤝 Thank you for your attention to this matter! 🫡
