I really, really did my best to stick it out with this podcast. Like I clung bitterly to my subscription. But the eye-watering bang of privilege from this episode just broke the camel's back. Imagine the lack of self awareness it takes for someone who's biggest concern in their youth was whether they'd get onto the Belvedere rugby team - to reduce those from the North that took up arms amid the British army slaughter and the loyalist pogroms to 'all murderers'. When I heard that, it dawned on me that it's exactly the same mentality that had the presenter labelling those who have issue with migration are 'just racists'. Because when you're well off, all migration means is that your investment property is making bank, your house value is through the roof and now you can put the feet up while your Brazilian maid cleans the house and you swan off to your favourite ethnic restaurant. What's not to like, you hateful bigots? But migration looks a bit different when its doubled the social housing list in your area, your wages are being suppressed by overseas labour and 140k annual arrivals have made home ownership a pipe dream - and everything from school places to doctor's appointments as rare as hen's teeth. But hey, at least your community has been enriched by an IPAS centre so the women in your family get to be stared at whenever they leave the house. Like at one point, a guest mimicked a working class accent - and nobody noticed. If a politician did that with an Indian or Nigerian African accent, poor Matt would have an aneurysm. No word of a lie - when the housing crisis came up in this episode, a guest chimed in with a heartfelt, 'Won't someone please spare a thought for the poor developers?' So yeah that's a wrap.
