“Original artists have not shunned tradition, but digested it. The conflict set up between it and what is new in themselves and in their environment creates the tension that demands a new mode of expression.” — John Dewey

“You can't feel crazily grateful to be alive your whole life anymore than you can stay passionately in love forever, or grieve forever for that matter. Time makes us all betray ourselves and get back to the busy work of living.” — Tim Kreider

Remember “brb” and “gtg”? What quaint reminders of a time when Being Online wasn't just a permanent state.

@dianagetssocial 100% — even though I've read lots of well-reported, trustworthy content in digital, and lots of un-fact-checked nonsense in books!

@odrscll As someone who works in content, I don’t trust what’s probably like 99.9% of digital content out there. I prefer to read a book written by someone I know for a fact has done what they said they did and/or have a conversation with them.

Whether they are or not, some mediums just *feel* more trustworthy than others. A photograph feels more truthful than a painting. A native app feels more reliable than a web app. Information in print feels more trustworthy than digital.

This limit of the technology, in Atget's hands, becomes a feature. These photographs are not just a document of a changing Paris — it is as if they are taken from the city's perspective. To a city, each of us are just… passing through.

Enchanted by these photographs of empty Paris streets by Eugène Atget (1898) But look closely — the streets are not actually empty…
