86-year-old Lao Huang is a cormorant fisherman living in Yangshuo, China. Cormorants are aquatic birds known for their fishing abilities, diving from the surface to catch fish. They can dive as deep as 150 ft (45 meters) in search of prey. The history of cormorant fishing spans over a thousand years and was practiced in Ancient Egypt, Peru, Korea, India, Greece, North Macedonia, and briefly in parts of France and England. However, it reached commercial scale only in Japan and China. So, how does it work? The fisherman ties a snare at the base of the cormorant's throat, allowing it to swallow only small fish. When the bird attempts to swallow a large fish, it gets stuck in its throat and returns to the surface for the fisherman to remove it. With the advent of more efficient fishing technology, cormorant fishing is now mainly practiced as a cultural tradition and for tourist attractions.
