There’s a certain type of guy that you don’t find anywhere except ‘conservative’ conferences and high street estate agents

Up until the 1990s, the Daily Mirror had a policy of distributing free alcohol to journalists during working hours. Hacks were given a weekly ration depending on their seniority: the Sunday dep news ed got six bottles of red and six of white every single week.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Happy 1099th Birthday England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 On 12th July, 927AD, King Æthelstan secured control over the last Viking kingdom of Northumbria and united the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms under one ruler, becoming the first King of a united England. Terrible day for Norway.

Twitter today was making me reflect on when the press were befuddled at Tony Benn for going to Enoch Powell's funeral and when one journalist demanded to know why Benn was mourning someone he was at odds with, Benn replied "he was my friend." Shame we don't have more of that.

@Seoirse_ I will show this tweet to my wife as evidence (but hope that she doesn’t get any silly notions that it applies to her)

@LMSChairman …should be? Has there ever been a Scots missal? Occitan? Perhaps we could go all the way and have a scouse one? Even with “dumbed down” modern translations, the language used is very alien to many in the more remote regions of many countries. If only we just had a universal..

@LMSChairman This does raise a broader question about “vernacular” - while I appreciate that there is more distinction in those foreign cases than between most remaining European dialects and their main national languages, where do we draw the line with regard to how granular a vernacular 1/2

To specify, there are millions of Africans who attend Mass in Swahili, Mandarin Chinese, and colonial languages whose vercular is a regional language, either because they are in a multi-language city or because the Church lacks the resources to put on Mass in their language.
Joseph Shaw@LMSChairman

The vernacular Mass only helps you understand what is going on if you understand that particular vernacular better than a deeply familiar Latin. Many millions of Catholics attend Mass in a language not their own, especially in Africa and China.
