Quick point on this. No, Winston Churchill did not "engineer" the Bengal Famine. That is a lie pushed by hard-left anti-western agitators. Anyone who wants the historically accurate truth should read @aroberts_andrew on the subject. In short: it was caused by crop failure; was exacerbated by the Japanese conquest of Burma, which reduced rice imports; and Churchill did approve relief, not least through importing grain from Australia.

Scotland raised its top income tax rate to 48% to make the rich pay more.
New HMRC data suggests the result may have been the opposite: Scotland collected about £22m less.
We can't be sure, but Scotland may have fallen over the Laffer curve.

Actually a good move. I think it is scandal that you can have exactly the same salary with someone your entire working life, you save up for rainy days and they blow theirs, but the state charges you for care homes and they stay for free. Terrible for people with dementia
