There are few sights more uniquely Japanese than this: a JASDF F-2 streaking past cherry blossoms in full bloom. Interestingly, while it shares its roots with the F-16, around 95% of the F-2's airframe was redesigned, giving it a larger wing, advanced avionics, and a potent anti-ship strike capability tailored for Japan's maritime defense.

Echoes of War
Echoes of War@EchoesofWarYT·
On this same day in 1780, the Cedar Springs fight had a sequel a few miles up the road, and it was the Patriots who came looking this time. Colonel John Jones was leading a small band of Georgia militia, refugees really, men driven out of their own state who were marching north to link up with other Patriot forces. Along the way they got word that a group of Loyalists, some of them the very men who had just been mauled at Cedar Springs, were holed up for the night in a backcountry blockhouse called Gowen's Old Fort. Jones had maybe 35 men. He decided that was plenty. Under cover of darkness they slipped up on the fort where around 40 Loyalists were sleeping off a very bad day, and hit them fast. There was barely a fight. One Loyalist was killed and more than 30 were simply captured on the spot. Two quick, clean Patriot wins in a single day, in a part of the war where the Americans had been getting beaten and demoralized for months. Little fights like Cedar Springs and Gowen's Fort do not make the famous highlight reels, but stacked together through the summer of 1780 they turned the southern backcountry from a British stronghold into a hornet's nest, and that shift is what set up the big victories to come.

In his free time Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States, kept a pet mockingbird named Dick that he let fly freely around the White House. The bird would perch on his shoulder, take food right from his lips, and when Jefferson played his violin, Dick would sit there and sing along with him. This is a sitting President just vibing with his bird. He was also a relentless gadget freak. The man could not leave an object alone. He invented a swiveling chair, a revolving clothes rack, a folding ladder, mechanized double doors, and a secret writing machine for encrypting messages. He tinkered constantly with the dumbwaiter and doors at Monticello so food and wine could appear at his dinner table almost like magic. And he was a full-blown foodie centuries before that was a thing. While in France he fell in love with pasta and had a friend track down and ship him a special macaroni-making machine from Naples. He served his shocked American guests things they'd never seen, like ice cream, macaroons, and macaroni and cheese, which he basically helped popularize in the country. Oh, and he was obsessed with fossils. So obsessed he had giant mastodon bones shipped to and stored inside the White House, and there's an actual prehistoric ground sloth named after him. So the real Thomas Jefferson: plays violin duets with a bird on his shoulder, invents secret gadgets all day, imports pasta machines from Italy, and keeps a room of ancient monster bones in the White House. That's a founding father.

On this day in 1780, a British plan to wipe out a Patriot militia camp got blown up by the last person the Loyalists ever thought to worry about: somebody's mother. Her name was Jane Black Thomas. She had gone to visit her husband and other family members being held at the British prison at Ninety Six, and while she was there she overheard some Loyalist women talking about a surprise attack that was about to hit the Patriot camp at Cedar Springs. That camp was commanded by her own son, Colonel John Thomas Jr. So this roughly sixty-year-old woman got on a horse and rode nearly 60 miles through enemy-held country, alone, to warn him. She made it in time, and her son was smart enough to listen. Thomas had only about 60 men against a Loyalist force more than twice that size. Instead of running, he left the campfires burning bright so the camp looked normal and occupied, then pulled his men back into the dark tree line to wait. The Loyalists crept up on what they thought were sleeping rebels and walked straight into a wall of musket fire coming out of the woods. The whole thing was over in minutes. A few Loyalists were killed, dozens wounded, and the rest ran. The men who fought at Cedar Springs kept fighting all summer, and a lot of them showed up that October at Kings Mountain, the battle that broke the British in the South. Never underestimate a furious mother on a fast horse.
