There’s something magical about summertime in Canada, the warm nights, bright skies, and moments that bring us together. Last month’s Celebration of Light in Vancouver felt especially close to the heart, with breathtaking displays that lit up the night in true Canadian style. From the red maple leaf 🍁 glowing high above, to messages of hope, pride, and unity, each scene reminded me of what makes our home so special. We are the True North, strong and free, a nation built on freedoms that have shaped our identity and spirit. But as we celebrate, we must remember, freedom is not something we can take for granted. In today’s world, especially in the midst of tariff wars and global uncertainty, if we let our freedoms slip away, we risk losing the very identity that makes Canada… Canada. 🇨🇦 Let’s protect it, cherish it, and keep our nation strong 💪 and free.

I get the idea of voting for a person rather than just the party, but most Canadians don't do that including myself. Research and polls show that party loyalty influences the majority of votes; only about 4% of the national vote is affected by local candidates. In Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong, voters chose Marilyn Gladu as a Conservative with over 53% of the vote, down from less than the previous election. They did not vote for her as an independent or a Liberal. She campaigned under the Conservative label, criticized Carney and the Liberals, and explicitly said that floor-crossers should face by-elections so voters can have a "redo." Changing parties without resigning isn't truly representing your constituents; it disregards the platform and the party voters endorsed. If the electoral system is first-past-the-post and voters primarily choose parties (which they do), then switching parties without a by-election breaches the implicit agreement with the riding. Complaining that Conservatives are "impotent" doesn't address this issue. It comes down to accountability to the people who elected her as a Conservative MP.

@officialEBoland @MarilynGladuSL I don't really care about her opinion on it either. You vote for the person not the party. I'd rather have a single transferable vote system but that's not the system that exists right now. Perhaps the Conservative party should be less impotent and focus on real issues.

The opposition party’s primary role is to oppose the government, as stated in the title “His Majesty’s Most Loyal Opposition.” Furthermore, Carney’s efforts to address the tariffs have been unsuccessful, and they have only exacerbated the situation over the past year. Carney is doing such a poor job that he's making Trudeau look impressive— and that's saying a lot, considering I was hoping that guy would resign badly. However, Trudeau would never stoop this low just to secure a majority.

@andrewaperez @PoliticsFan2005 @MarkJCarney Gladu's riding is hurting badly from Trump's tariffs and the downturn of the auto industry. It needs help. The current CPC model is to oppose absolutely everything if it comes from the Liberals, even when they've been consulted. Let's see if she can find some decorum.

If @MarkJCarney can attract the likes of very "Blue Tories" like Marilyn Gladu into the Liberal fold, then every Conservative MP is on the table. I must say, as an intimate observer of Canadian politics and someone who has closely watched dozens of party defections over 20+ years, I find the Gladu defection to be nothing short of stunning! Ms. Gladu is not a Red Tory; she's a conservative's Conservative and won her Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong seat by nearly 12,000 votes a year ago in a very tough election for her former party. In the previous two elections in 2019 and 2021, Gladu won her seat by massive 15,000-16,000 vote margins with *the NDP placing second and the Liberal Party an extremely distant third* I hail from southwestern Ontario, and my Mom was born and raised in Gladu's riding; while it Sarnia-Lambton may have once been a bellwether riding, it has been the personification of "conservative country" for more than two decades now. That Gladu saw appeal in @MarkJCarney's leadership and the direction of the new Liberal government speaks volumes. If Carney can attract Conservative MPs like Gladu, no Conservative MP is safe! #cdnpoli

Firstly, I was 12 or 13 at the time, so I wouldn’t have had an opinion as I was more interested in other things than politics. I mentioned in my comment that “…regardless of party affiliation). Secondly, it’s been over 11 years since Harper was in power. Come up with a better argument, as the Harper, this, and Harper that, is getting old. The issue is that Canada voted for a minority government, not a manufactured majority, which Carney has done.

@officialEBoland @MarilynGladuSL Hey Eric were you calling on David Emerson to resign after he crossed the aisle to Harper’s government literally a week after winning Vancouver Kingsway in 2006? That scumbag ran for a party he knew he would win in a cakewalk if he had run as a Con he would’ve got decimated.

I mean this is her, your new Liberal MP owns words, just three months ago. “Gladu tells The Independent she agrees a by-election should be called if someone leaves their party to go to another. “Really, the whole point of being an MP is to represent your constituents. So if they’re voting you in under one platform –for you to switch for whatever reasons, just seems to me to not be representing what you’re supposed to be there to represent. “We elected you under this banner, and if you don’t want to be under that banner, then we deserve a chance to have a redo.””

@officialEBoland @MarilynGladuSL That's not how this works. That has never been how this works. Getting upset at the system rather than your party's ineptitude is peak Conservative voter behavior.

@cranium243 @MarilynGladuSL Harper, this, Harper that. Do you guys have any original comebacks? He hasn’t in government for 11 years, and yes, I would be critical. Besides, the balance of power wasn’t catering to the government’s potential majority vis floor crossing.

I mean in January she said to a local paper the following, her words but mine. “Gladu tells The Independent she agrees a by-election should be called if someone leaves their party to go to another. “Really, the whole point of being an MP is to represent your constituents. @officialEBoland @MarilynGladuSL What most people do doesn't change how the system is supposed to function. You can serve your constituents better by being in the governing caucus and extracting concessions for your riding by making a deal to cross the floor.

And this was a article that was published in January, just nearly 3 months ago. So when are you gonna to resign @MarilynGladuSL and call a byelection? “Gladu tells The Independent she agrees a by-election should be called if someone leaves their party to go to another. “Really, the whole point of being an MP is to represent your constituents. So if they’re voting you in under one platform –for you to switch for whatever reasons, just seems to me to not be representing what you’re supposed to be there to represent. “We elected you under this banner, and if you don’t want to be under that banner, then we deserve a chance to have a redo.”” Source: petrolialambtonindependent.ca/2026/01/11/gla…

It’s time to resign and call a byelection. Being a floor crosser, regardless of party affiliation, should automatically trigger a byelection. Before the Liberals attack me and claim that we don’t vote on party lines, it’s important to remember that most Canadian voters vote based on the candidate’s party affiliation. This is why you see the party name next to the person’s name on the ballot.

My comment suddenly gained a lot of attention. Some people can’t understand sarcasm and blunt language. This is my personal opinion (not expert) on the matter, and here’s the expanded response. Also, I don’t necessarily agree with everything the US did in this situation, but that’s beside the point regarding the current Iranian regime. Iran's "10-point proposal" is basically a surrender-and-pay-me list disguised as diplomacy. 1. Maybe: A mutual non-aggression pact could be discussed if Iran actually stops threatening everyone and arming proxies. 2. Not a chance in Hell: Iran doesn't "own" the Strait of Hormuz. It's an international waterway. Threatening to close it is textbook piracy. 3. A cold day in Hell before that happens: Unlimited uranium enrichment = nuclear weapons capability. No serious country is signing off on that after Iran's track record of deception. 4. I don’t see that happening: Lifting all sanctions (primary + secondary) with zero verifiable changes in behavior? That's not negotiation, that's capitulation. 5. Good luck on that one: Asking the UN and IAEA to just erase all the resolutions Iran has repeatedly violated is fantasy land. 6. Hell to the nah: Reparations? Iran wants to be paid for the damage caused by the wars it started and funded through its terror proxies. Absolutely not. 7. Don’t see that happening, especially if Iran defines the “region” as including Israel. The U.S. isn't abandoning its allies so Iran can dominate the Middle East. 8. Depends: If Iran and its proxies (Hezbollah, Houthis, etc.) actually stop attacking Israel and shipping lanes, maybe. But we all know that's not going to happen. 9. Don’t see that happening anytime soon: Releasing billions in frozen assets with no real concessions? That's just funding more missiles and drones. 10. That would get vetoed by a UN Security Council member (probably the U.S., and maybe others). Turning this wishlist into a binding international resolution is never going to fly. This isn't a serious peace proposal. It's Iran demanding the world reward its aggression and nuclear ambitions while it continues destabilizing the region. Hard pass.

1. Maybe 2. Not a chance in Hell 3. A Cold Day in Hell before that happens 4. I don’t see that happening 5. Good luck on that one 6. Hell to the nah 7. Don’t see that happening, especially if Iran defines Region as including Israel 8. Depends if Iran and their proxy stop attacking Israel 9. Don’t see that happening anytime soon 10. That would get Veto by a UN Security Council member.

@isaiahrmartin You and the Democrats, along with the media, were bitching hours ago that Trump was a war criminal and demanded the 25th Amendment because he “threatened” to end a civilization. Now, there’s a ceasefire, you’re now saying Trump always chickens out or “taco”.

Who actually supports this? I certainly don’t, and I’ve said this before. We can’t join the EU because we’re not located in the European continent, which is a requirement for membership. Additionally, I don’t want to live under their totalitarian laws that limit free speech and rights. I also guarantee that the US will have an opinion on this, regardless of whether they have a Republican or Democratic President after 2029.
