Adult literacy student—27, male, has a high school degree, but really can barely read—went to his local library to find some books that would supplement the tutoring he is doing with us. Anyone want to venture a guess as to how that went? Did the librarian know about the adult literacy crisis? Did he/she welcome him warmly and have ideas for him on the ready? Did the library have curriculum that would help an adult coming to them for help reading? Or did they just vaguely direct him to the children’s section, leaving him entirely uncomfortable and unassisted —and hesitant as an adult male to go into a children’s space? (“Maybe next time I could bring my nephew so I could go in there,” he said.)
