Like Someone in Love (2012) dir. Abbas Kiarostami 3/5 Japanese romance of sorts, an escort and and old man. Tadashi Okono's journeyman portrayal of the old man is subtle, calm and accomplished. Not a flashy movie, slow, it's mostly in the dialogue and some clever staging along the way. The ending...

@VintageMrHobbes It’s an absolutely daft system if anybody here on a temporary visa is somehow able to use that temporary time as a reason to stay for forever. If it’s not deliberate it’s desperately stupid.

The simple and obvious solution is that their visas end, they go home and child poverty here will reduce without it costing us a penny. However, the actual approach will be the Gus O'Donnell "maximise global welfare" spendathon, and we get a load of foreigners to support forever

Excl: New analysis shows plans to impose the new 10-year settlement rules to migrants already in the UK will increase child poverty by 90,000. Labour rebels have seized on the findings to argue that the policy conflicts with the party's pledge to reduce child poverty. They are planning to force a symbolic vote in parliament to expose the scale of opposition to the plans on the Labour benches. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

@stuarthammond14 I think at the population level it is okay and if it says you’re obese you almost certainly are, but I don’t understand the lower / normal range. I couldn’t possibly imagine how a ‘normal’ man could be as skinny as you’d need to be to have a BMI of 18.5

I’m at the you can see my abs, ribs, cheekbones but BMI says I am overweight stage of bullshit fitness stats. I know it doesn’t matter. My annual medical however is a 50-50 toss up if the doctor is sensible or just goes by that one number and says I am ‘overweight’.

I ‘could’ lose 4 kgs. At this point I would be about 23.5-24 on the BMI scale. Also at this stage, people will ask me if I am eating.

@ofjmx @taipan168 Oh, also had a soft-top Suzuki Caribian when I lived in Thailand. Also derided as a “hairdresser’s car” here, it was phenomenal off road, even if it couldn’t go round a corner at more than 4mph.

Anybody who thinks a Mazda MX-5 is a "hairdresser's car" has no idea about cars. Four generations since 1989, a heritage approaching that of the Porsche 911, the top selling sportscar of all time and a car that basically every motoring journalist likes.

This is not good news given what will now happen to UK finances as a result of the war on Iran. And perhaps we can have some silence from all those who piled to exaggerate the significance of January’s freak figures. The UK borrowed a higher than expected £14.3bn in February. The shortfall between government spending and income was £2.2bn higher than in the same month a year ago and far above the £8.5bn forecast by economists polled by Reuters. At a time of peril for nation’s finances it is frightening to have R Reeves as Chancellor.
