🇮🇱🇱🇧 The Lebanon ceasefire looks cleaner on paper than it actually is. Israel and Lebanese government officials just met in Washington for the first time in nearly 40 years. Big moment on the surface. But here's what the headlines aren't telling you: Hezbollah is at the center of whether this deal holds, and everyone knows it. They just can't say it out loud. The Lebanese government can't formally negotiate with Hezbollah. Too much domestic pressure. Too many sectarian fault lines. So instead, deals get brokered through informal channels, quiet conversations, and middlemen. Rami Khouri from the American University of Beirut put it perfectly: "Hezbollah is at the centre of the ceasefire, but behind a curtain." That curtain is doing a lot of work right now. Disarming Hezbollah is the real ask underneath all of this. Israel wants it. The U.S. wants it. But nobody has figured out how to actually do it without blowing up Lebanon's internal politics in the process. So what you have is a ceasefire that depends on an armed group that officially isn't part of the conversation. Source: Reuters
