The expiation typically involves paying the value of the animal to the owner if found; if not, like in the case of the questioner, the value goes to the relevant community or is given in charity. In addition, other scholars suggest that the killer should also repent if there was negligence on his part, as innocent animal are not to be killed unjustly. For specific guidance, prominent scholars like Ibn Qudaamah in Al-Mughni: Volume 9, Pages 95-101, among others, emphasise paying compensation based on the animal's value to the owner, or donating the value in charity to a community project, the poor or the needy, if the owner is not known to you.
