Someone asked me: “IF I FORGET MY PASSWORD, WHY CAN’T THE WEBSITE JUST EMAIL IT TO ME? DON’T THEY HAVE IT?” Me: They shouldn’t. Secure platforms never store your actual password. They store a hashed + salted version of it: • Hashing = turns your password into a one-way scrambled string • Salting = adds random data so even identical passwords look different So even when hacker get access to the database they cannot still get to have access to your real password. This means even the company can’t read your password. So if a site emails you your password in plain text just run😂 That means they’re storing it insecurely and if they get breached, your password is exposed. Good security = password reset, not password reveal.
